Gary Fisher Simple city bikes

Postby rogklee » Fri Jan 29, 2010 6:39 pm

Hey guys,

First post in this forum so hi to all firstly!

My girlfriend and I are looking to buy our first bike. For her, she's really just looking for a stylish bike, for a easy comfortable ride. We saw the Simple city 3 and 8 bikes the other day and yup they sure are stylish. but are real expensive. Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of anything similar (she states an attractive bike) with probably internal gear hub? i think that's what its called for under $1000.

There are lots of bicycles like this. Under $1,000 makes it a bit hard, but there are options:

This 3-speed Electra Amsterdam probably best fits your criteria. Although, I am inclined to recommend getting the 8-speed version where possible.

Hey thanks for that,

Looked at the Electra range and your right, the amsterdam original range is also a good option we'll keep in mind.

Was thinking of keeping it at a 3 speed to keep prices low. Would you suggest paying extra 3-400 for a 8gear?

The big question is what sort of roads and hills you expect to ride on. I cycle along major cycleway which mostly follow creeks and railway lines, so they are basically flat, and with a little bit of fitness a 3-speed tackles it all without trouble. If you are going to hit hills, then an 8-speed is a good idea. In the interests of safety, I would also recommend getting one that is fitted with a front brake.

Once again, I'll plug the Apollo Pavia Nexus 8 speed at $829

or try the ladies step-thru version of this 2010 3-speed (Nexus)
Bianchi Milano Parco for $749 .....

Or the Trek Belleville WSD 3-speed for $899.....

.... all available locally (try Cecil Walker)

I think that the lady wants to ride on something that will also be a bit of a fashion accessory.

Steel City Cycle Works

They will do a custom lady's bicycle with a 7-or 8 speed drive train for about $1,100 according to their website.

hehehe your right, style is no. 1 for my gf.

saw the gary fishers in store today, they are real nice and so are the amsterdams.

however, saw the Electra Townie in a magazine, and VERY interested in that too!! Looking at a three speed but can't find any in Melbourne (most can order them in, but none we can see)

Anyone have any idea where we can see one in the flesh? Or someone which stocks a lot of Eletra bikes??

Try Goldcross Cycles or Brunswick Street Cycles or Melbourne Bicycle Centre for Electra, I think

Or buy one of these for $299.....

.....then pick up a discounted '08/'09 7, 4 or 3 speed hubbed Apollo 26" wheeled 'Trailcruiser' or 'Sierra' etc. (try Bayswater cycles) for around $500, and swap the parts over.....

Just an idea

Thank you very much, will check the shops out indeed,

I also found a few at St Kilda cycles (after a few hours of searching) so will pop over there too.

Would consider the cheaper option, but have no idea how to fix a bike chain let alone swap parts. My girlfriend seems pretty set on the townies anyways, so we'll see how that goes.

Roger

The part-swapping isn't hard. Once you've done it a few times you'll end up turning your garage into a workshop and trying all sorts of things. It gets addictive.

Hey guys,

Just to keep you updated,

So went out the the LBS to check out the bikes the other day, and found the Townie awful to ride!

Bike never seems to want to ride in a straight line, steering is flimsy and your hands sit up so high, nearly at shoulder height. Just didn't seem comfortable.

After some consultation, we checked out the schwinn cream. Much better with a lower price point too. Comfort was good, nice and easy to ride with *the most important part* a nice colour scheme!!

Think we've found the keeper.
