So, Stage17 is going to feature a grid start, ala F1.
Can’t see it’s going to make any difference, likely the peleton will be back in team formation with a few kilometers.
A reverse grid may make it more interesting if it gives the roleurs a better chance to escape.

That could well be, but it also may depend on who is where in the GC. Some team may take the initiative and drop the hammer and isolate someone from the start.

Just how the start formation may affects that, who knows.

We'll find out soon !!

I have heard from a friend who cycled the Col d'Aubisque yesterday that the road down to Laruns has collapsed in places and the route for stage 19 may have to be changed. Some quick searching found this: Route of key Tour de France mountain stage in doubt after road collapse on the Aubisque (+ video)

Oh !!! Wonder what the alternates are ?

Is the finish in Larun’s still likely ?

I don't think there is another way down from the Aubisque to Laruns. I think they are still assessing the situation.

There is a bit more info in this article:
StickyBottle - Tour de France mountain route at risk after flash floods

The gist of which is summarised in the following quote from the article:
Routes off the mountain and into the intended stage end location are limited. As a result, it is unclear if the road collapse will force the stage to be rerouted.

If that were the case, the changes may be quite significant. Local officials have been quoted in the French media saying the race is on to fix the road.

Furthermore, they have also said the Tour’s owners ASO have not yet requested a route change.

Instead, they are willing to allow some time to assess if the repairs can be carried out

That sucks. I rode down there in 2013 so was looking forward to watching this stage. :(

How many metres before the Grupetto is formed ?
I like the sound of this stage - shorter but harder stages are much more likely to be exciting. Stage 19, 2011, 109km, was a cracker because there was no room for mistakes and no long flat bits for the peleton to regroup.

I think the key to Stage 17 that will provide the fireworks (or not) is that it has a solid climb from the go. 14.9km (AT) 6.7% is a damned hard warm up for another two steep climbs - 7.4km (AT) 8.3% and then 16km (AT) 8.7% means a total of ~ 37.3km of climbing, with 23 and a bit of that at over 8%.

It will either mean someone loses bulk time (ala Yates or Pinot at the Giro) or the fireworks are left till the end and it's a grind all the way.

Either way, it's a damned hard stage !!

Not to mention that it's the stage which is having the grid start, so many of the domestiques will already be at the back right from the get go.

MS have not selected Caleb and gone all out behind Yates.

Risky strategy and feel for Ewan, but c'est la vie !! Will probably cement him moving to another team as there have been rumours circulating.

Barguil's team, Fortuneo-Samsic had Look withdraw their supply for frames, pedals and wheels.

Someone's not happy, and for a French company to pull the pin on a French team with a French star two weeks before the TdF is just a wee bit of a huge decision.

Lotta work behind the scenes to change it all over and get it set up again, not to mention a huge expense.

It seems they have already switched bikes.

This bike was used in the recent Boucles de l'Aulne. It is NOT a Look 785 despite what the paint job says:

Yes, that is the rumour but it doesn't really look like a BH Ultralight either. The head tube is fatter and the 45 degree angle between seat and chain stays is not right:

Could be an Argon 18 Gallium:

So who's gonna get out there and put up a name for the win? I'll start.

Uran, with Bernal and Valverde my wild cards.

Unless Froomay wins, of course

Biggest loser/sooks

Cavendish, with Boohani a possible outsider

I'm betting that Froome is leading after stage 21 but loses it all on stage 22, which is why I probably won't bother staying up to watch

2nd place on the podium (& corrected entry in record books) will be the bloke I bagged last year Bardet with Quintana in 3rd. Porte will be a contender till the 3rd mountain stage (stage 12) when he implodes.

Your Spanish speakers are 30, 40 and 66 to 1 for the win, respectively.

I don't understand why the bookies have Porte at second favourite. Surely Nibali and Bardet are more likely to do better than Porte.

Podium I'd like to see is Bardet, Porte & Nibali.

Prefer Porte on the top step, but would be really happy for Bardet to get on the top step. Don't really care how Sky doesn't get there (major ambush on St 17 would be nice), but don't want any of them in any of the leaders jerseys at the end.

You're being rorted. Bet 365 has them at 23, 41 and 18 respectively 8) Porte is 2nd at 4.50 then Quintana at 8.00

I reckon 20 bucks on Bernal each way for $1,040.00 is pretty good.

You might want to check your maths as to who is being rorted F&O - last time I checked it was much better for a punter to put their money where the odds were longer.

As for why Porte is 2nd favourite, while bookies set the initial market, they then follow the bets to try & keep a balanced book - more money on 1 nag rider means the odds get shorter, if few people back that rider, the odds go out. If Porte's odds don't go out, its because people are backing him at those odds. You already know what I think of those people

Nice detective work, the Argon is very close and it could just be the different colour and light.

Short stage are exciting as the riders all have a lot more energy so the battles are more exciting.... but this year I will really be a bit more passive than passionate.
