Bait bike projects

Postby talkingtree » Wed Aug 27, 2014 2:19 pm

Hi,

Is anyone interested in forming a bait bike project (like what they have in US)

The aim is to reduce the thieves amongst our community, so we can park our beloved bike on the street feeling safe.

The procedure of the project simply will have:
- A bait bike chained
- Upon being stolen, an alarm system with GPS will activate and notify the owner
- Call police and catch the thief

sounds like a good idea but how do you stick a GPS tracker in a bike?

personally I would rather wait in a car near the bike and watch it. When scumbag A proceeds to tamper with the bike, you jump out and smash his bloody head in. Body is removed, bike is put back in place, and all parties resume monitoring from their vehicles while they wait for scumbag B to come along.

How about a 1' CO2 powered blade that thrusts out of the seat tube and the thief gets to keep the bike?

I'm more inclined to 50g of C4 moulded to the underside of the saddle...

The true test of if it will work is if it gets funded on kick starter.

I'm still waiting for the yarra boulevard tack spotting kickstarter.

Your bike is stolen and you're left stranded without the phone, map, housekeys, passport, food and water, change of clothes that were with the bike. You might have been on a world tour and it just ended, badly. You're left wearing lycra duds, cycling shoes that you can't walk in, 2 hours left on the sunscreen. Heaven help you if your medication was also on that bike. This is our misery as cyclists.

Look, if you are a bike thief then you're a volunteer for my personal cyclist awareness program. The corrrect punishment is to have the thief stripped down to underwear, no food or water, their only shoes are ice skates to walk in, then dumped in the bush miles from any help, a long way down a dusty dirt track and a very very long walk home. When a bike is stolen the thief is never concerned about how the owner will get home, what they're left with, will they be putting someone in harms way, so turnabout is fair play I reckon. The bait bike with the gelignite stick hidden in the seattube might be a popular project but it won't change community attitudes about respect for cyclists like rubbing a few noses in their own mess will. And the occasional horse head on a pillow wouldn't hurt either.

are you actually serious? are you saying that a person who steals a bike should be deprived of human rights?

I like both ideas, we could mix it up a bit, some thieves could win an instant mystery bum spike while others the surprise express Brookes suppository. I wonder what we could do with hand grips....

Its probably worthwhile to see if your local police are also interested in the project, since they form an integral part of the operation and it would really be a downer if they fob off your request to track down the gps because they live in dire fear of performing more paperwork on some obscure legal grounds

is that something you only believe because you are a cyclist and highly value your own bike, or is that an objective view that you hold of all thieves?

I'M IN!

I have wireless camera equipment if necessary.

Just need someone else with patients and guts willing to perform a citizens arrest.

It will go down on a Saturday night in Chippendale, Sydney.

Not only will i have a possibility of getting my bike back but this could bring major satisfaction to anyone willing to help.

I've got CCTV of a cretin stealing some bikes in the Glebe area. Once I have it cut down, will be providing to the Police. I'd be interested in a bit of baiting action....

I did a police sting operation recently, to recover my stolen bike. I'd been planning to have a hidden recording device on me during the operation, just in case, but the police told me it's illegal to record someone without their consent.

The reason I mention this is because I was thinking of doing my own bait bike project, involving a few hidden gopros, but now I'm wondering about the legality of it. Obviously CCTV is ok...
