Shimano Ultegra Di 6750 to 6800 11spd conversion

Postby TonyDragons1 » Tue Jan 14, 2014 6:47 pm

I am looking to change up from 10 speed Ultegra Di 6750 to an 11 speed Ultegra Di 6800 series.

As far as I can tell I will need to swap out the crankset and fit a converter to the hub to place an 11 speed cluster. I'm assuming that the chain will need to be changed and firmware updated. Will the levers and derailuers need updating?

My rationale for the change is I am doing 3 Peaks and would like to have a better spread of ratios, run an 11speed 11-28 cluster with a mid compact crank. The 6800 series allows me to change the chain rings to suit the terrain or the event that I am doing rather than having to do full crankset changes.

I would appreciate the forums advice on my proposed upgrade.

Cheers!

The 10-sp derailleurs can't be updated to 11-sp, so you'll need to replace both. The existing front can work with the new RD, but the programming software will crack the poos at you & tell you it's an incompatible mix and may not work properly. You do not need to change the shifters; they're a "lazy" part of the system in that they don't play any part in the gear calibration.

Ease of converting the rear wheel to 11-sp. compatibility could well vary depending on what you have. The 11-sp. cassette body is longer than 8/9/10-sp, so in order to fit in the same frame width at minimum there needs to be some adjustment in axle spacers and redishing of the wheel. If you have Mavic wheels, then you can simply remove both cassette spacers and you have 11-sp. compatibility. These are the only pre-11-sp. hubs that are compatible.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I have been looking at this - the 11 speed chain seems to be thiner, a new chain maybe required.
Would love to know the total conversion cost if you go there

Thanks for the responses so far.

I'm running Reynolds Carbon Clincher wheels, can you recommend what I will need to do with the rear to get the cluster to fit? (Is it a new hub?) if so what do you suggest as a viable option.

I've not seen the 6800 Di derailuers being sold separately on any of the regular online stores as yet, where can I get hold of them?

If the hub is new enough to be 11-sp. compatible, there will be two spacers behind the cassette, the regular thin one that goes behind a 10-sp. cassette, and a thicker one to compensate for the extra length of the 11-sp. cassette body. Otherwise, you're best contacting Reynolds to find out what's involved in a conversion.

As 6870 is still very new to the market there may be a bit of a delay before individual components become available.

Evans has FD and RD in stock.
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/shi ... r-ec055818" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

All accounts say you don't need to change the FD.
The 11 speed chain has the same internal width, but the outer width is a bit narrow to fit between the 11 cogs. As such you don't need to change the cranks either.

So RD, cassette, chain is all that is needed. On the off chance that the system has a mental about the 10 speed FD you can always buy that later but I've seen plenty of reports of it not being required.

I've contacted Reynolds and they have said that the wheel will need to be "redished" what does this process entail?

Tightening the drive side spoke nipples about a 1/4 turn.

Redishing entails changing axle spacers to move the entire hub towards the non-drive side in order to fit the longer freewheel body into the same frame width, then pulling the rim back over the centre of the axle via adjustment of spoke tension.

Update time:

I have just got my bike back from the shop after the 11sp conversion has been completed. These are the parts that it required:

Crankset - I used an Ultegra 6800 Compact
BB- new bearings to be safe
Chain - 11sp Dura Ace
Rear Derailuer - Ultegra 6800 short
Hub - 11sp Dura Ace (required as my wheel was 24 spoke)
Cassette - 11sp Ultegra (I bought 3, 11-23/25&28 to cover all bases)
Firmware - latest refresh, the system gives a warning on screen that there may be a compatibility issue; it all works perfectly fine! (I have original Ultegra Di levers & front Derailuer)

Cost.... I haven't done the full sums yet, buying bit by bit like I did has probably cost me more. Having to go to Dura Ace for the rear hub added quite a bit on as well. This was only done due to the fact that my rim was a 24H version. I put DT spokes in so the rear wheel was fairly expensive.
For the purpose of the forum I will go through the invoices and post a full cost including where I sourced the parts from...

The verdict?
I've done 500m on it so far and am delighted! Going to give it a big go tomorrow with a Bobbin Head, Galston Gorge and Mt White hill fest planned. Very keen to see how I go with the compact gearing and the 11-25 . Stay tuned for an after ride report..

Cheers,

Crankset and bb were optional, not required.

Very pleased to hear that the FD and shifters worked out OK - VERY pricey part of the Di2 system!

I have just done the conversion.

My wheels already supported 11 speed.

Purchased Rear Derailleur, Chain and cassette. I went with the new GS derailleur so that I can run the 32 tooth cassette for the hill climbing that I enjoy so much.

Firmware did not need to be upgraded. Just installed cassette, chain and RD and everything else just kept working fine.

Only issue I ran into is that with the 1mm spacer in place behind the cassette the chain would rub the frame when on the 11tooth cog; only on a couple of the links. So I removed the 1mm spacer, checked for clearance of the RD on the spokes (heaps of room) and retuned the RD. All seems to work just fine. Now need to go back to the documentation and find out if the thin spacer is really needed or not (2014 Shimano Dura-Ace C24 clinchers and the 11-32 Ultegra cassette).

Happy camper here. Did Mt Coot-tha this morning on it, and LOVE being able to keep my cadence higher on the climb.

Your 11 speed cassette came with no spacer, why did you use one? It is not required.

Or any Campagnolo hub made since around 1999, or DT240s or ...

It's a very good point... Let's just put it down to a miscommunication... :-)
