Are these good wheels and are they repairable

Postby cwc » Sun Oct 19, 2014 6:15 pm

As the thread suggests.... I have been gifted these wheels. There is a fine crack at one point as the pic details. Also tubular and I am a tubular virgin. I'm currently riding on a 32 spoke hed series c2 with hope hubs (Im 95kg and had them made for me.

Is it worth fixing these up to use or are they a storage job? Alternatively, are the hubs good hubs to be salvaged and used in a different wheel build?

All advice welcome. ImageImage

That rim is cactus. The crack at the spoke hole is bad enough but there's another crack as well.

Yep, dead rim. Campag hubs are damn fine, but you're going to have a challenge finding aftermarket 16H rims to put them in.....
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Zipp, Enve and Reynolds all do 16H rims.

A significantly less expensive option is the Kinlin XR-300.

Velocity should be able to custom drill any of their rims. The B43 is a tank but is a roughly similar profile.

I'd sell them on ebay. Even with full disclosure about the condition, I'd expect you'll get a couple of hundred for them.

Velocity rim quality these days is dreadful.

How about lacing the hubs to every second hole of 32 hole rims? Lots of variations around on that theme.

Cheers,

You could buy some blank rim hoops and or get them pre drilled to suit your hubs
I would personally throw the rims hoops in the bin you don't want to end up like this bloke below.

I have some 20 year old Shamals in need of a replacement spoke on the rear, if you're breaking up your wheel to lace to a new rim then maybe you can part with some spokes?

The driveside spokes were 273mm bladed and as they were about 3mm wide each spoke hole in the flange is slotted so that you can lace in or remove a spoke, not difficult to do but just annoying. The nipple is a 5.5 hex head so you'll need one of those spoke keys and there's also a proprietary spoke head washer. Maybe that's too complicated but if you're going to pull the wheel apart then for a little extra trouble you've got some hard-to-get spokes with nipples and washers to sell off.

That's Mark Cavendish in Tour de Suisse Stage 4 2010 sprinting for the front to win, Its actually not a direct wheel failure he touched with Haussler first but they took out most of the field up front. It looks impressive but yeah! I wouldn't like to be him at that time and place.

glad to hear you say that.
I had an issue 2 years ago with their quality control, and stood up to them over it, for which I got a week of crp attitude.
Swore I'd never deal with them again.

I like their customer service though. I enquired about an old 90s set of wheels which started cracking at the spoke holes, and they said that it shouldn't happen if built correctly, etc. Then they offered me a new set of rims. Though, I've found that the old 90s Velocity were better quality than the newer ones.

Anyway, I like Shamals. Got the track versions, as well a Gipiemme 416. I could be interested in them.
