Agreed. Exactly why I did not think of it being an issue earlier. I realise its illogical, but I'd rather fix all issues as I find them, then make the final determination.
I have another frame with a BB with square taper. I'll check they run straight then:
try out these 'problematic' cranks on the spare frame and see if the chainrings follow the same pattern of movement. If they do, the crank arm and/or rings are warped. If not, then its solely and illogically related to the frame BB threads and/or BB cartridge.
I can also test it the other way, use the spare crank off the spare frame onto the 'problematic' frame. If they follow the same pattern, the problem relates to the frame BB threads and/or BB cartridge
This way I can isolate what the problem is definitively. This is sounding more like a next weekend job.

100% correct.koshari wrote:So i think i misread your diagnosis. If you have an issue with angular alignment of the bb , spinning the crank the chainrings wouldnt move closer/further to the frame at any part of the revolution however the chainrings would appear to always be on an angle relative to the frame plane.
Took out the BB, put in the non drive side cup first, then rethreaded the drive side and actual BB back in. The threads on the drive side could use a run through with a thread cutter to clean them out, but lets face it, its a junk bike frame and that BB is brand new and never coming out again More importantly, it's definitely straight now.
Went a little crazy with a set of poly grips on the chainring. Everythings straight (enough) now and I wizzed about with no chain drop!!!! Success!!!
Had no idea how much fun 26" bikes are. Really feels like a BMX (still large size frame, checking the geometry of this to the recent X-Caliber 29er and most of the comfort (reach, seatpost to crank etc) are within a cm of the other. Suddenly doing weelies down the driveway, very, very happy with this outcome! thank you for the help!!!!
