Long and short cleat Bolts

i've mounted the cleats with the long bolts normally,
what is the reasoning behind the shorter bolts
would there be less pressure on the soles of my feet, by using shorter bolts

Long bolts when the short bolts are too short. For me, I have wedges (shims) to adjust the height so need the long bolts.

If you take out the innersole, usually you can see the bolts and of course they shouldn't protude others it will get uncomfortable.

Some shoes have a thicker nylon or CF/nylon composite sole so also take a few more mm.

Just pulled the flat innersoles out
there is no access to the cleat plate.
but have noticed, that the innersoles are packing down nicely

PS - big fan of Crank Bros. I still manage the cleats and the brass shim on the short bolts.

The tread is not thick enough for the plate.
but good to know that short bolts are good on CB cleats
Oh the joy o new cleats was awesome, the sore toes, was something else
the replaceable cleat plates, means i can use the shoes for more than just riding too
Oh and the Northwave cable system is awesome, you can microadjust the tension

Regardless of others experiences it is always worth making sure that there is enough thread engagement.

Whilst pulling a foot off the pedal isn't as dramatic as this it can cause a nasty moment before you can get things under control again.

went the shorter bolts today
ride went well
no issues apart from realising i should buy cleats more often

Long bolts will protrude and will make your feet uncomfortable but it's for if you put the crank bros cleat shields as pic shown below. Then it will fit as short bolts will not be fastened when it's installed with cleat shields.

The sheilds are a good idea in theory , but unless your tread is extremely deep,
my enduro shoes are a cross between a tyre and a flat shoe designed for platforms or SPDs
i find that the cleat sits proud of the tread most times, and these cleats are damn expensive at a LBS

I have used Crank Bros Candy 3 pedals for 5 years and haven`t replaced the cleats yet but it still feels a bit loose when riding in pedals. I know that it`s time to replace it but I`ve got a spare one with new shoes and will be replacing it from old shoes soon.

Yes, it`s exxy at LBS but buy it online such as Wiggle CB cleats or c r c CB cleats. But don`t buy from E-Bay as it is cr@p.
