11 speed chain tools & chain whips...?

Postby simonn » Mon Apr 27, 2015 9:54 am

Moving to 11 spd shimano on both roadies and I have noticed that Park Tool has chain tools and chain whips which are 11spd compatible, with the other equivalent tools marked as X to 10 speed.

I know that Campagnolo has an overpriced (surprise surprise /s) 11spd chain tool, but do Shimano chains and cassettes really require 11 spd compatible tools?

I've worked on 11-sp. with 8/9/10-sp. tools and had no problems.

You could use a single-speed chain whip if you wanted to, just wrap it around the biggest sprocket (which you should do anyway for maximum contact area).
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I've just gone 11sp on ten roadie and was about to ask the same question. There does not seem to be anything magic about and 11sp chain that would prevent it from working with my existing chain breaker/installer. Likewise for the other tools.

Only thing I am not sure about are bladed straight pull spokes, but that is the least of my concerns right now :-)

I've had no problem using my old Park CT-3 chain tool on 11sp Shimano chains. Bare in mind that the spd specification typically just a reflect what range of chains are available at the time the tool was made. Campy 11sp chain tools are clearly different with rivet peening. Chain whips are not an issue either...

I'm not too sure about them either but that may be for other reasons :D

Same - no need for new tools IMO.

I built my own chain whips in the eightys for my 6 speed cassette (needed two) to remove as different technique. I used an old chain then so a 5/6 speed. It works on my current 10 speed with no issue ( yes its a bit thicker but holds teh cassette with no issue

Would a chain breaker from the 10 speed era damage an 11 speed chain? Just using it to break the chain, not reinstall a chain ping.

Any thoughts on using a 10 speed quick link on an 11 speed chain?

Read above. No problems with 8-10-sp. tools.

I wouldn't use a wider link though; may cause some issues with catching on the more tightly spaced sprockets leading to rough running.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I use the Park Tool chain whip on my 11s Campagnolo setup, no issues. I also have the Park Tool chain tool with the peening attachment and it's all peachy.
As others have said, if you're concerned about the chain whip getting stuck between cogs or whatever, simply place it on the largest cog. Do mind your knuckles on the spokes though, specially if you have bladed/aero spokes

I'm still using 10-speed tools - no problem at all.

ah this is good to know I was about to ask, thought I'd search and revive old thread.
I've a bunch of chain tools (well a pile of multi tools and 1 proper chain tool) and never thought about the speeds until recently. But since all the chains I've broken have been 9 (or less) i was wondering if since I see lots of rumurs to 11 sp tools, I could see why they wouldn't work, chains haven't changed, just the width stuff, so the breaker would work the same.
I get the quicklinks wouldn't work (9/10/11)...
But also i never even considered it with my whip, don't 9, 10 and 11 speed with it with no issues (apart form operator error).

But anyway have imminent chain/cassette swap on the GF's 10sp stuff, so that'll get done soon, then onto my 11sp suff (about to hit 7K on the origianal chain and cassette) then the 10sp mtb (haha about to be 1500km on those)...damn gunna cost me $$$
