MODS: Given that the OP was too lazy to use the search, can we have this merged into Type of Chain Lubricants (Polls) or at least moved to The Shed, where it belongs

To restate what I've already said: sensible chains with quick-releases - hot wax. Silly, weak (10sp) chains - squirt.

I like the hot wax to clean my chain occasionally to make me feel good. It is also a good way to condition a new chain. Squirt in between.

I have both the Wet and Dry lubes from Muc Off. The wet version I found to pick up HEAPS of crud after just one short ride - even when riding in dry conditions.

That's exactly why wet lubes are not recommended for dry conditions.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Yes I know now Duck.

When I bought it originally I was a total newbie. And the LBS said both were fine. In retrospect not a good choice for riding in dry weather.

I've tried all Muc-off's ceramic lubes and even the team sky hydrodynamic. They were utterly crap, they all thinned out and made my drive train noisy after 30 minutes.
Cleaning was another problem as it flung everywhere even after wiping down.

Morgan Blue is my fav now.

With the muc off, did you apply and then ride? The key with that stuff is to apply fairly liberally and then leave (overnight is best). When it is dry it stays put and I find is good for a couple of weeks of daily commuting at least, in dry conditions. If you rode straight away not surprised it disappeared

My updated favourite list is... I'm sure I've been through more but these are the ones I can remember now.. The first three are all 500k+ lubes and are used very sparingly. 4-8 are 200k ish. 9 was about 50k before needing re-doing but it did smell nice.

1. Dumonde
2. Motorex dry/wet.
3. Morgan blue race.
A really big gap..
4. Rock and roll. (you use a lot when applied as directed)
5. Park tools.
6. Purple extreme (I would like to re-test this on my current gear)
7. Finishline ceramic (great for speedplay cleats).
8. Shimano PTFE (great for speedplay cleats).
A really, really big gap.
9. Bike Milk.

Finishline Teflon is the only lube I've tried that doesn't seem to get really filthy on both my mountain bike and road bike. Filthy as in collecting all the dust and grit off the bike paths and trails into a grinding paste. It doesn't like getting wet but I reapply after riding in the rain.

When I was a teenager I used motor oil, but I don't remember it being a clean experience.

I have been using Rock 'n Roll Gold for years. Works fine ...

Today I mixed graphite powder with melted candle wax and dipped my MTB chain in it. I'll see if that works well enough to get me changing my religion.

Cheers,
Graeme
So, how'd it go?

Rewaxed mine the other night. Only 450km this time due to the amount of wet riding.
Happy as.

Very well! No sand sticking to my chain when I'm riding this new fat bike on the beach and the local tracks, no squeaking at all. So far, so good! I think this is a winner for me.

On the page before this one, Storm Boy mentioned that a rice cooker would work, so I went to Big W, spent $14 and picked one up specifically for the job. It works like a charm.

Cheers,
Graeme

I have an old tupperware container which goes in the over at just under 100C (in a tray "just in case") with the chain in it. But my other half has gotten used to this sort of thing. :D

Have gone back to a wet lube. After trying a few different things on my mostly commute bike and getting sick of constantly needing to re-lube, it seems that wet lube is the only thing that will last more than a few days.

You just haven't used the right dry lubes. Try motorex dry (500k+) and dumonde (800k+)

If someone says "trust me", well :D :D :D :D :D :D

Seriously, are you getting 25mm of rain every day? I'm averaging 500km between re-waxing (no, Virginia, not my legs, the chain)

Recently come across a company in the states selling pre-mixed wax using the friction-facts formula.
http://moltenspeedwax.com/pages/about-us" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
not cheap either, probably better to stick with the homebrew stuff.

The C3 is good for dry conditions but when you go through the smallest puddle of water it sounds awful.
