Terminal hit

Postby Ivanerrol » Sun Jul 29, 2018 9:51 pm

I have backed into my Specialized Allez.

Bent rear derailleur - easy replace - , Slight issue with the wheel - fixed, Changed the derailleur hanger for a new one.

I suspect I have bent the aluminum rear stays - more the stay that goes from the seat down to the rear axle area.

Wont change rear gears properly - derailleur seems to be out of line.

Are bent aluminum stays repairable or once they're bent that's it?

I've always been of the understanding that once alloy was bent, it was toast. If it is repairable, it would be a framebuilder sort of repair, with the corresponding price tag. Possibly not viable, depends on the bike and your relationship to it..

sorry to hear btw..it's never nice facing the loss of an N

Have you checked the bike with a derailleur hanger alignment tool? If you can't see where the seat stay is deformed then any bend is probably very slight. It might be that you can use a hanger tool to get it aligned. The hanger is designed to bend before the frame does anyway, so it might allow you to compensate for the stay.

Hanger alignment tool will not show if the frame is bent.

You may need an assistant... Run a string line from one dropout, around the head tube and back to the opposite dropout, ensuring to match the placement of the string on both dropouts. Measure the space between the sides of the seat tube and the string - they should be equal; if there is a larger gap on one side than the other, the frame is bent.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

And the result is..... one centimeter difference.

The rear wheel is not centered in the stays and the gears wont shift properly - derailleur alignment is way out.

I took the frame down to a brand name LBS - they're only interested in selling a new $$$$ bike.
Another repair shop is looking at it - although they're not to hopeful. Even if it is repaired my 100Kilo+ weight might put a repair out again in short time.

<personal opinion>
Don't repair aluminium, except in very limited circumstances. GripSport in Vic do repairs, but I don't know that even they would touch a bent stay issue.

After careful inspection cracks were found in the derailleur side stay close to the B.B.

Even more worrying was the bike making strange noises at speed going downhill.

New frame or new bike required.

Wilier GTR Team or Specialized Roubaix? (The former is on special 40% off- is cheaper than Roubaix)

Wilier very light weight frames but uber thin wall = buzzy ride from my experience (Gran Turismo & Cento Uno) but after alloy Alez maybe not an issue for you......
