Advice on Brake/shifters fro Flat bar project

Postby pj.richards » Mon Aug 27, 2018 8:27 pm

I have a 9 speed Gitane drop bar road bike that I wish to convert a flat bar road bike.
I would recommendations on a suitable brake/gear shifter combo to use.
It is running a Shimano 9 speed rear Tiagra derailleur with a double chainring on the front.
What are the recommendation, please?

Shimano Sora SL-R3000 shifters and BL-R3000 brake levers will do the job perfectly.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Duck will probably confirm, I think any 9speed Shimano mtb shifter will work. I’ve also used an mtb triple front shifter successfully on a double crank by using position 1-2 on the shifter - but they were mtb front derailleurs.

Yep, all Shimano 9-sp. shifters & rear derailleurs are compatible, but front shift pull ratios differ for road & MTB; in fact for a while flat-bar road front shifting was different to "normal", requiring specific front derailleurs, but newer generations have removed this difference.

The other thing to watch out for is that only some MTB brake levers are compatible with road calipers; as such road levers are a safer bet.
