Removing herdened gel from frame

Postby bianchi928 » Tue Sep 25, 2018 3:31 pm

Hi Brainstrust,

I have spilled some energy gel onto my carbon frame, didn't realise and now it has hardened and solidified.

I have tried the hot flannel to soften it as well as goo remover, all to no avail.

Can anyone please suggest a way to remove it without damaging my frame?

Many thanks.

Wrap a wet rag or towel around the effected area for five minutes and it will just come off.

Hot water and light smear of elbow grease.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

I have been giving it some thought after the hot water didn't work initially and I am now thinking it's not gel.

Time to investigate.

Cheers

If it's not gel... what was making you go faster?

As long as it's neither DOT brake fluid nor Loctite, I'd ignore it. Can't be too bad.

hmm .. last year, a similar thing happened to me.
i went over a packet of gel on the way to a group ride meeting point (dark morning).
felt something warm, gooey and sticky splatter over my shin. i thought it was juice or yoghurt.
but after the ride, i could see orange liquid/stain solidifying on the bottom of the frame, wheel and smeared on my leg too.

it was a PITA to remove - tried acetone, simple green, warm, soap, wd40, degreaser, etc ..

i ended up using a US-made concentrated liquid wash that my wife had access to (via direct marketing). it just removed the gel effortlessly, i kid you not.
(it was also the same stain remover i used to get rid of bike grease from my recaro seat)

Makes you wonder what happens to that HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) when it's in your intestines...

The hydrochloric acid in your gut makes short work of it.....

Actually no - it's amylase from your pancreas....

So smear a bit of pancreas on there.
