Worn chainrings causing skipping

Postby tez001 » Sun Oct 28, 2018 1:29 pm

Last week I decided to treat my trusty to a new cassette and chain. To be honest, probably long overdue.
While riding yesterday when putting power down while standing up, I get what feels to be skipping of the chain or some other part of the transmission, like a crunching sound for about 1/8 of a turn of the crank.

Thought it may have been rear cassette, hanger, adjustment or freehub related but they all check out fine in my opinion.
Which leads me to the chain rings. The previous cassette and chain had no issues with skipping. Im guessing the new cassette and chain have amplified the problem of the worn rings? They've done just under 15,000kms.

Dead Outer ring, has rolled shoulders , and no stampage marks left
Inner ring is fine, still has chamfered markings in place,
Just depends on budget, whether you replace one or 2 rings

Thanks, what do you mean rolled shoulders and no stampage marks?
Looking a the price of chain rings, it's nearly just as economical to buy a whole crankset.

If you compare the Big/ Small ring

Stampage is the Machining marks, of the small changrings, you can still see at the tip off the small teeth

Rolled shoulder, is where you can see the leading Edge of the Big Ring Teeth, are worn past the tip of the teeth..
(visible on small ring for comparison)
and extending and changing the shape of the valley between teeth
Hope that makes sense

Just look at the profile of the big ring vs small ring and you can see the difference in teeth very easily. Does it do the same on small chainring? If not, then buy a new crankset as chainrings as $$$$.

Thanks will replace the chainrings or whole crankset. Doesn't seem to be skipping on the small, however they seem to be cheap. It's the large chainrings which are expensive.

Having said that, I just found a set of chain rings for $95 odd vs $140 for a whole crankset.

Big ring is the exxie one (but looking at the inner face of it, it's 105 at best, so not one of the crazy expensive hollow ones; small rings are quite cheap.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

What chain lube do you use or have done?

Using squirt from new, one chain replaced and 3+ years latter the old girl is still running on the original gears and changing gears sweet.

Next time most likely a rear sprocket change, done at least 12000 kms....most likely many more, just saying a $30 a bottle of the good stuff at $15 a year has proven it's worth ten times.

Ive just been using Rock n Roll gold every 2-3 weeks. Drip on and then wipe off after leaving it for 15 minutes or so.

StevOz out of 12,000kms, have you just run two chains and a cassette?

Just on my second chain, still on the original cassette and my bike is no light racer.

It's a hybrid Fuji traverse 1.3 with a rear topeak rack and bag which is always loaded with gear and or shopping.

I let my chain get way worn (It died in less than < 3,000Km! Bloody 11S! ) and ended up having to replace cassette and chain rings as well. The chain whip wanted to slip over teeth on the cassette undoing the lock ring, and under load the chain was slipping on the small ring. A rather expensive lesson - chains are much cheaper than doing a whole drive-train. Luckily - I'm running 5-bolt chain rings, so they are still cheap if you are prepared to wait for shipping from OS.

That's pretty good life out of a cassette and chain.

Is 11-speed noticeably less durable than 10-speed?

Not my experience.
5,000km per chain.
20,000km per cassette and small 39t ring . 53t ring only used less than 10% of riding, never replaced.
I keep 2 chains on 1000km rotational change, run till 10,000, then 2 new chains on same rotation to 20,000.

10 speed bike odometer 37,000km's and 11 speed odometer 24,000km's on one bike and 12,000 on another.
I don't bother measuring chain wear these days, I just ditch them at 5000km's.
My system seems to work, never had chain skip on sprockets.
Wipe chain clean with a Chux type cloth and oil with Triflow or Purple Extreme every 200km's.

These are road bikes rarely ridden in the rain.
On my touring bike ridden largely on rail trails and dirt roads I have worn chains out in less than 3000km's and chainrings and cassettes in less than 7000km's (9 speed).
