FSA Self Extracting Cap Loose

Postby jackthelad » Mon Oct 29, 2018 1:15 am

Was working on my Rd bike.
and noticed that there was a bit of loseness in the cranks,
so loosened off and reattached the cranks, but the self extracting ring loosened off as well
is there a different replacement?
who the hell owns a Pin Spanner in perth,
so i don't have to go to LBS for 5 minutes work as i already have the loctite

FSA self-extracting caps do have a tendency to take themselves a little too literally. Fortunately though they use a different threa pitch to the crank bolt, so even if they do loosen off while you're undoing the bolt, the bolt is winding out of the BB spindle more. Find a pin spanner (or hell, go to your LBS and buy one!) Take the cap out & grease the inside face to lubricate the contact point between cap and crank bolt before reinstalling.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Ended up going to the LBS
Borrowing a pin spanner
and using a little Loctite 243 on the Self extractor
its worked so Far, i have installed and taken off once
Still left with 1/2 to 1 mm of movement
Like a spring/wave washer short of it fully installed

It's completely normal to have a bit of play between the crank bolt and extractor cap, about half a turn or so between releasing the crank bolt from the spindle and it loading up on the extractor.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Update

So after realising it was the Non Drive Side Preload/Crush washer that was missing
Went to LBS, Largest Chain in perth TBE .
i wanted a crush washer for a BSA MegaExo
they bought from there warehouse, a BB30/Pressfit version of it..
FML, when you know the part you need more than the retail store employees ordering the wrong part.
