Rear Hub Noise

Hi all,

After replacing the cassette on my rear wheel a strange noise has started.

There is a bit of vibration through the pedals also, it seems the wheel bearings are ok as the noise is only present under load, so the free hub perhaps? When riding it is more of a grind.

The hub is a White Industries CLD. I rode in the rain last week if you think it may have something to do with water egress.

Not sure if changing the cassette is a just a coincidence, I changed back to the previous one and the noise is still present.

I've also removed the Bottom Bracket and checked for play but it seems fine. As do the bearings in the rear wheel.

What brand 11 speed cassette is it?
What was the previous cassette, and specifically was it 11 speed, and is your chain 11 speed?
was there a spacer ring on the inside of the cassette on the previous one? If so, did you use a spacer on the new cassette?
Did you fine tune the rear der after installing new cassette?
Did you reseat the wheel properly? especially before fine tuning?

Shimano.
Yes, both 11 speed, have run the cassette on the bike previously (12-25 changed to 11-32)
No spacer ring that I'm aware of, I keep them stacked on the OEM packaging when not in use
Shifting is smooth
The hub is a thru-axle 142x12 so all good there.

Did you take the chain off?
Has it been threaded through the jockey wheel cage properly?
There is a pin or plate on the inside of the cage that will snag the chain if the chain isn't routed correctly.

Got me thinking though, changed cassette back and I think there are two sounds going on:
1. freehub taking up when accelerating, which is normal (hand spinning cranks)
2. the second sound is only with the 2nd cassette

I think the 2nd noise could be the chain not meshing/slipping with the cassette. The chain has done almost 4000kms with the 12-25 cassette but only a few hundred (when new) with the 11-32. Would this be the case? Might need to get a new chain to use with the 11-32?

That chain is probably about knackered.

Old chain on new cassette is your problem. Exact life varies between riders depending on the conditions it's subjected to, and maintenance, but 4000km is getting into the territory where it's likely to be due for replacement.

For anyone interested, put new chain on with the near new 11-32 cassette, all good now!

Incidentally Duck, will he need an extra link or two going from a 25 to a 32?
I thought a 32 on a short cage rear der was pushing things too.

Got a long cage already, no need to cut down chain, went straight on.

Depends on the method used to measure the chain length. If the chain was measured to the big ring and big rear sprocket, then yes, the new one will need to be longer to accommodate the increase in sprocket size. However if it's measured to the small ring and small sprocket, with just enough tension to ensure it runs through and under the derailleur without interference or excessive slack, it will fit every cassette option in the groupset range, even on a short cage (Shimano any way; SRAM WiFli long models have a longer body as well, so the shorties don't fit under bigger than 28), but the biggest cassette can get a bit marginal with compact or semi-compact chainrings due to the size difference between the rings. If in doubt, just avoid the big ring & big sprocket.
