Unless they have turned the athletic track at the rear of Lidcombe oval into a Velodrome, There is no back straight at Wyatt. Don't reply before you google map the track, or look up next time your grinding away. I played for the West Magpies in the early eighties and remember my thighs burning running around that long curved arc, and racing Friday nights while you call the race "Vegan" LOL.

Fair enough, it depends on what you mean by straight. Compared to the front section, which you can lay a ruler along, it's not a straight, but given that you're not actively changing direction, it's a straight. I call it a straight, and the guy holding the mic is always right.

I think my Yr 9 maths teacher may argue the difference of an arc, compared to a line, but no one is doubting the good and generous work you and your family do at that track.

Keep it up and more power to you Dave. :D

But you can make a straight line by short cutting an arc, so there! :P

I've got a PhD in physics; ignore every thing you ever learned about Euclidean geometry, it's all bunk.

And you're likely to end up in a drainage ditch and looking like your photo above.

Yep, took an oath to not destroy reality, but I'm still trying to quantum tunnel to the front straight from the back one.

Back on track - who's this? 89 Track championships in Lyon. Taken from: http://thefixedgear.wordpress.com/page/26/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hmm,

Dean Woods? He won medals in LA and Seoul so he was likely to still be strong in 1989.

Cheers,

Bzzzzzzz (Not Woods) Cameron
The photo is the Amateur 4000m run off for Bronze which Steffen Blochwitz (East Ger) received.
(if nztony quote and memory is correct)
In 1989 Dean turned professional and raced for 'Team Stuttgart' in Germany.
He rode in 5000m Pro Pursuit at Lyon (at this meet) and got the Silver.
This is him at that meet (below). Amateurs and Pro's were still separated at this era.
My possibilities are Wayne McCarney or Stephen McGlede :?:
Another possibility is it is the other Pro 5000m Pursuit rider there, Rik Sloane.

Isn't it Martin Vinnicombe in the Time Trial - he was second in the World championships in '89 & '90.

I think it might be. I did a google image search and found one of him riding that bike, or one identical to it.

I think it is Vinnicombe. I always remember him being more solid though.

Probably due to the roids.

now now  .... as we know, he wasn't the only one. I give the guy credit for at least being honest and manning up, pity others like O'Grady and the other 37 like him have lived in denial all these years. And Marty's offer to name the establishment names who were in on it, hasn't really been enthusiastically received. Easy to make him the scapegoat. I actually like the guy.

The bike was era common and copied off a Cinelli Laser (most rode them).
Here's a photo (below) of Martin Vinnicombe in 1986, and much heavier.
(Original Lyon photo is facially still like Rik Sloane? maybe i'm wrong?)

Sorry DD didn't see it there. (gotta a link maybe) :?:

Anyhoo, a point on the "drug" thing and if this is the Lyon 1000m TT race,
an interesting anecdote (below).

I have always maintained that if drugs plays a part in competition, LUCK does moreso. :D
Aug. 15, 1989 1:32 PM ET
LYON, FRANCE LYON, France (AP) _ Jens Glucklich of East Germany won the one-kilometer time trial
Tuesday at the World Cycling Championships after Olympic champion Alexandre Kiritchenko
of the Soviet Union broke a handlebar less than 200 meters from the finish.
Glucklich was timed in 1 minute, 04.032 seconds. Kiritchenko, the last rider on the track,
was ahead of Glucklich's pace after two of the three laps when his right handlebar
of his cycle came loose. He had to throw it away and finished in 1:05.060.

Second was the 1987 champion, Martin Vinnicombe of Australia, in 1:04.950.
Later, Kiritchenko was given the chance to race again but refused because of the hot weather.
He holds the indoor world record of 1:02.576.
It would have been seen that Kiritchenko was the best rider on the day, but ended up with Bronze.

'Glucklich' (with an umlaut over the u) is German for 'lucky'.

How did you go dragging your big brain up all those hills on your retro ride?

No place for words and ideas where the "Man in the ring must stand up" Physical effort always humbles the keyboard warrior in us all.

Gravelrash, in two-dimensional Euclidean geometry,
dancing is a perpendicular expression of a horizontal pursuit.
