Victorian Omnium - What is a Tempo Ronde?

Postby ironhanglider » Wed Oct 05, 2016 11:47 pm

CV wrote:The Victorian Omnium Championship is a single competition consisting of four events which shall be held on one day in the following order:

Men will race is in two groups MEN (ELITEM & JM19) and Masters Men (MMAS)
1. Scratch

2. Tempo Ronde
3. Elimination
4. Points

The distances will be made available when we either have the number of starters or recommended details from the UCI.

We're aligning the events according to the new UCI format. There will be no timed events (Kilo/IP) and only 4 mass start events conducted in one day.

Category Medals will be recognised based on overall results placing for ELITEM, ELITEW, JM/W19 and MMAS/WMAS.
I was hoping to dust off the track bike and was looking at the upcoming events when I looked at the Victorian Omnium description. (I doubt that I'll ride in it BTW.) Whilst administratively I can understand doing away with timed events, because they are resource intensive and time consuming, but does anyone know what a Tempo Ronde is? Is this really the new UCI format?

Cheers,

Cameron

From Track Torque FB page
Wondering about what this Tempo Ronde that is appearing in the news about the most recent changes to the Omnium format from the UCI... we're still waiting to see official publication of the rules from the UCI & Cyling Australia but this was the best description we could find in our search for answers.

"There are sprints every lap, beginning after five laps. The final placings are determined by accumulated points won during sprints and by taking laps, while any riders lapped by the field must leave the track."

Thanks dalai47,

So it is basically a more intense points race.

It is presumably designed to encourage attacking riding, since the reward for a 5 lap breakaway would be more significant.

However I wonder if that will mean that in effect the breakaways get jumped on instantly since a fast response will deliver you a perfect lead out.

Agreed!

Understand that they feel the timed events are less interesting for spectators, but the Omnium is an event to find the best all round track cyclist, not the best enduro cyclist!

I think that you could argue that a Madison is in the category of SCE, but it is still my favourite one to watch. Maybe it's like motor racing, the near-crashes add to the excitement, the actual crashes not so much.

Regardless of what an omnium has been in the past, it has assumed an enduro focus because the omnium and the TP is all enduro riders have to aim at for Olympic medals. Maybe they should eliminate the team races, and run three sprint events and three enduro events at the Olympics as stand alone medal events. Then allow each country to have two starters per event, i.e. up to 6 'specialists' and the one 'generalist' with the generalists competing for Omnium points in each of the Sprint, Kierin, Kilo, Points, Pursuit and Scratch alongside the specialists.

Back to the Tempo Ronde and the new format, I suppose massed start events also have an element of being 'fairer' on outdoor tracks where changing conditions might impact on the running of the timed events.

I have to say that it'll be a tough gig to be an official for the Tempo Ronde, with less than 20s to decide on placings, record the points and administer penalties such as relegation for improper riding etc. That'll be busier than an elimination which is tough enough. Maybe they'll only award points for a win.

Cheers,

Cameron

Apparently the omnium is an enduro event now, they have deliberately excluded all the sprint events and made it 4, mass start events that can be run in one day. That was my understanding from the UCI release that was sent to commissaires this week, anyway.

Details on the Tempo race are still sketchy. I'm guessing it will just be point-a-lap for the leader only so relatively simple to run and record points while the chief commissaire can take a little more time and focus on enforcing the other rules regarding safe riding etc.

On another note, madison rules will be changing to be like the pointscore (taking a lap = +20 points) and they are bringing back double points on the last sprint to try and keep it alive until the end.

These people are frigging idiots. If you take a lap in a madison you are the winner. Points are only relevant if several teams are on the same lap.
My uncle was twice European madison champion, was a madison and six day specialist for 18 years in Europe. Ive just completed writing his biography. So these idiots can just change a format that has been used for decades and turn it into a points race with partners - oh because its easier for the officials.

Ive been to proper madisons in Belgium, and six-day races. They are amazing. Australians have NO IDEA how incredible a real madison race is, with madison specialists.

Makes me so angry.

Agree completely - for me the 'heart' of the Madison is gone now.

Australian legend Graham Gilmore agrees too and is very angry about it.
