You should probably check with the manufacturer as to what size tyres the wheels are optimised for

TT Wheels

Postby toolonglegs » Fri Apr 06, 2012 4:44 pm

Just ordered the last single front wheel (82mm tub) in the planetx stock take sale. Need to find a disc now!.
Prorace seem to be well priced... Any experiences?... Or I go 2nd hand.
Also anyone got recommendations on 20-21mm tubular tt tyres?.
All I need now is a frame /disc rear and clothing :-) .

Conti have a TT specific tubular, Podium TT. If your rim can take it, get a 19mm one for the front and 22mm rear. These are light, kickass tubs, very high pressure (more than 200psi for a 19mm I think and a bit lower for 22). Check Ribble.

Mavic & Prorace for starters.

Thanks Nikolai... I will find out what gos best with this wheel... will such a skinny tyre be an issue for handling on a tight prologue course?.

Edit:did you just add Mavic as I was typing that? :P ...yes you did... and prorace too!... oh you mods  .

The guy who owns the HED trispokes that I used (see pic page 1) has recently brought a HED disk wheel.

This is handy list Mike... I just bought a planetx 82mm front which they had just one in their stock take sale... Now I need to find a disc rear. Would prefer new for obvious reasons.

Was it in the 2010 TDF where a disk wheel failed as the rider left the start gate?

If you get your pressure right, not really although the feedback from the front wheel with these babies could be a bit scary on some corners. If it's a tight prologue, then don't go for the 19mm, it just doesn't make sense to use them. You need them for a fast, mother of all time trials kind of race, you put them on for a bit of aero advantage and nothing else. If there are too many tight corners to deal with and the race is short, personally I would rather bet on grip rather than aero. With good grip (and some balls of course) you can gain time on the softies just on corners alone - every time you brake later than them, every time you exit a corner faster than them, you gain time. 20 corners later, you have something to write home about. This, btw, is true of tight criteriums as well and I used this approach many times with good results.

Thanks, this is the route for the prologue... pretty tight stuff. So maybe a 50mm front will be good with my road tyres.
We have a 25km TTT the next day so will maybe try the deeper wheel then.

...and of course there is a zipp disc going for a good price not too far away... but I haven't got the spare cash at the moment  .

Also I am a bit worried dates with going to the Veulta might clash with the French TT champs I want to do at the end of Sept... eek!.

Who me mike ? ... I have my front wheel now ( well it is with courier now ).
Rear wheel I won't have before early May stage race, only have a prologue in June... Then nothing till late August... So no hurry or decision yet.

Man I hate maps :) Is this near Dijon? At any rate, yes there are a couple of tight corners soon after the start, everything else looks like normal, road kind of corners. Personally, considering there's a longer TT the next day, I would use the 19 at the front and just tip toe it on those first 2 or 3 corners and then the game is on. Again, if you get your pressure right, they're fine, nothing like some soft rubber 25s but they don't just slide from under you for no reason either. Always a good idea is to ride the course before the race, especially a short prologue. You'll be flying like a missile, you need to know where at least you don't want to crash :)

Yeah it is around the Dijon area... the Tour des grands Ducs. http://tourdesgrandsducs.skyrock.com/photo.html?rev=5
I am hoping to win the prolouge (only stage that suits me  ) ... be nice to be in leaders jersey when before the hills!.

PS...roughly what sort of pressures are we talking in these tyres?.

Judging by the pic of your bike I saw, it would be hard to guess :) I have recommended this page to a couple of people as a starting point to find their optimal pressure. For a nice, concise explanation of what's going on, read this paper.

Keep in mind it's a starting point only. Tire pressure, like a few other things in cycling, is a bit of a voodoo science :) trial and error method is indispensable :) good thing though, it doesn't have to be spot on (it's not MotoGP after all, different speeds, different weights).

I've procrastinated on the wheel purchase and time is running out;

Sun 01 Jul 12 NSW Individual Time Trial Championships (if I want to upgrade my license, probably won't bother)
Sat 21 Jul 12 NSW Club Team Time Trial Championships
Fri 07 Sep 12 NSW Masters Individual Time Trial Championships
Wed 03 Oct 12 Australian Masters Individual Time Trial Championships (this year its in Coldburn brrrr)

Sorry to barge in on the TT specific forum but as a roadie enthusiast with no inclination to either train with or compete with a TT bike i have a wheel question.

If i were to rotate a pair a pair of current model Corima 3 spoke monoblock wheels on my Colnago C50 road bike, apart from the cost of doing so and the harden road ride the solid wheels are likely to offer over wire spoke alternatives along with the brake pad switch outs when going back to my alloy rims, am I going to be penalised/limited in other ways for using these solid spoke wheels on flats / undulating rural roads. I have a pair of Shamal tubulars which I'll use for steeper gradient riding.

These solid spoke wheels compete well with the more traditional rim/spoke carbon aero wheels in the weight stakes and now they actually look the goods which is half the reason I am considering being very unconventional and using a pair as road bike wheels. Are there any obvious flaws in my concept minor or major? I can't see why I can't use these as road bike wheels....

i don't think they are allowed for mass start events (RR, Crits etc).

Cheers Chookman

I should have been more specific.

I want to train on these wheels - non competitive. I want to know how they might be suited / inappropropriate to use in a regular road bike frame on flatter terrain.

i have a Corima 3 spoke on the front for racing TT's and they are a nice wheel and strong enough train on; however i don't think there is a clincher version available and unless you have heaps of $ would you really want to train on tubulars?

Recently switched to tubular tyres, love 'em........ I don't have heaps of money but saved enough to purchase a pair of $2k solid spoke wheels and have tubulars pre-stretched waiting for a new home............

Chookman, how does the valve set up work out on Corima 3 spoke wheels - permanent extender in place?

depending upon which tubs you use you'll need either a short extension, or if you use vittoria EVO corsa, you replace the whole valve stem with a longer one
