Hi guys, purchased myself a smart trainer and have been doing some structured training this winter season.
After a session on the trainer I find that I flood the room with my sweat.
I do have a fan, but its just some El' Cheepo from Kmart, its positioned 2-3 oclock.
Does anyone have any recommendations on something I can purchase that will do a more adequate job of cooling me before I start researching.
Also, with a smart trainer (Tacx Vortex), when in ERG mode am I suppose to be changing gears?
I find that I need to be spinning at a much higher RPM than normal to hit certain power numbers needed (Or I could just shift gears).

Fans: get more. they don't have to hit you front on, point them at your sides and your back. 2x at 45degrees each works pretty well. Bunnings/Masters sell big 80cm diameter fans which will freeze you into oblivion.
Erg: the idea is that it doesn't matter whether you shift or not so in reality, no you shouldn't shift. That said, you want to keep a relatively good chainline and i know my trainer allows a bit of flexibility with cadence if you shift so it's not completely pointless. I don't Erg that much though so maybe someone else with more experience can advise...

You'll need an industrial quality fan. It won't stop sweating but will cool you much better than the woefully inadequate job a domestic fan does.
I have one of these:
http://www.fanmaster.com.au/cooling/138 ... 50mm-specs
but there are various models, wall mount, pedestal, and floor standing. That happens to be a specialist company that sells those sorts of fans I've just used as an example but there's no doubt others.
They are noisy, so keep that in mind when setting up your training den.
Erg mode should control the power level for you irrespective of the gearing/wheel speed however some units need the wheel to be turning within a certain range to work well. I'm not familiar with that specific trainer though so it may work differently than what I'd expect.
Some thoughts on indoor training here include explanation of why good cooling matters:
