Some segments I have noticed are a bit screwy, especially if they are short. There is one nearby here which shows speeds more than double what you actually did. I queried it with Strava and they checked it out but said they couldn't do anything because it was something to do with the short distance and the GPS coords. In other words too hard basket.

It is hardly a coveted KOM with only 100 or so other riders on a small back street moderate climb, but the times on it are very fast so I will have a go at it in when I have some form (if that ever happens!!). To get it will take a 45 second effort of 700+W which not many can do. Queequeg and I are similar level riders when we were at our peaks which was not at the same time unfortunately. Both of us have suffered with health/injury so it is a shame we have never been riding at our peak at the same time to have some good friendly Strava rivalry which is one of the things I enjoy most about Strava!! If anything, I would say that Queequeg is stronger on a longer effort, and I would be stronger at shorter efforts. I think we could both beat the current KOM if we were on form and got our good bikes out with no commuting luggage.... but no point talking it up... lets just get our fitness up and let the bikes do the talking!
I agree with posts above..... just flag stuff that is clearly not right. I normally give the rider a few days to correct it and then I flag it. My way of doing that is just to file the Strava emails of lost KOMs and go through them once a week. I typically flag about 5 rides a week of which 99% are clearly in cars and 80% of them are repeat offenders... probably about 90% male and 10% female which is probably similar to the ratio of males to females registered on Strava. I would say 95% are accidental when someone forgets to stop an activity and drives home and could not be bothers to crop the ride. Then there are some who seem to enjoy going on drives with Strava running just to annoy Strava users by taking their KOMs.

Yep, that wouldn't be far off. I wish had the power meter back when I set the KOM. The closest one I have with power is a 50s time (https://www.strava.com/activities/808435576#19744007133), and it was off the back of a hard day, plus a massive PR on the Westbound M2 Run. I had a 636W AVG power with 900W Max, which sits pretty much in my comfort zone.vosadrian wrote:Perhaps we could have a race of the injured for Neale Ave!!

My favourite one is the M2 Segment from the Murray Farm Rd Bridge to the Exit Ramp Crossover for Cyclists (https://www.strava.com/segments/6643464), even more so because I did it with a Pannier bag hanging off the side, on my heavy commuter bike. I happened to get that one on video, which is good because a few people doubted it was genuine

It was a bit strange, the same guy uploaded the ride to two different profiles, so held a dual KOM which was quiet obviously done with motor power of some kind.

check out the speeds. me thinks someone has been bluffed. now i'll have to log 8 separate cases with strava to get them fixed.find_bruce wrote:Get the error message "Cannot create a flag on an activity that already has a resolved flag."jasonc wrote:I currently have a list of rides that it won't let me flag:

Most weird was a private segment I have created to track my own commute times. Of course I hold the KOM for that segment - I'm the only one on it and no-one else can see it!!!

I agree - looking at http://www.strava.com/activities/913020325 - he has power, heart rate & cadence up to km 79 - then nothing & his seed go up to 60km/h - looks for all the world like the bike went into the car.jasonc wrote:check out the speeds. me thinks someone has been bluffed. now i'll have to log 8 separate cases with strava to get them fixed.

70km/h shouldn't be anything that would cause any suspicion if there is a downhill section, especially with those velomobiles - they fly downhill. On my way home this afternoon I was doing 71km/h on a main road on my bike. Remember I'm only 60kg and the bike isn't much above 6.5kg with everything on it.Rhubarb wrote:I've only very recently signed up to KOMDefender. Pretty funny to see a few of my own rides come back as suspect Understandable though given I don't wear a HRM unless its a special ride, and I track my rides just with a phone, no garmin, so no cadence, and lastly I ride a velomobile in a hilly area so I exceed 70km/hr on every ride.

I just tried flagging a couple of them and the messages came back that the "issues" had been resolved. In other words, somebody has previously flagged them and, in each case, the rider (so-called) has claimed to Strava that his effort was legitimate. May I suggest you open one case with Strava for all eight, and give them a serve for failing to investigate properly the first time around. Anybody with a functioning brain should be able to see that these are examples of blatant cheating. Why can't Strava?jasonc wrote:jasonc wrote:I currently have a list of rides that it won't let me flag:

That last one has dodgy GPS. Too many dead straight lines where no road exists.jasonc wrote:jasonc wrote:I currently have a list of rides that it won't let me flag:

I know it is possible to fake your GPS location on phones because one of my sons did it to his phone to catch different Pokemon

The thing that annoys me most is most of these the guys seem to actually be cyclist, but still do not remove a dodgy ride after being caught out. Even if it was an accident. How hard it is!JPB wrote:That last one has dodgy GPS. Too many dead straight lines where no road exists.jasonc wrote:jasonc wrote:I currently have a list of rides that it won't let me flag:

I did it once. Jumped in the car to home. Simple crop and all back to normal!

Short segments are a bit 'luck of the draw' when it comes to the timing of the GPS record.

Why not just ride the bicycle over to the start of the ride, and then there is no worries about needing to turn off the GPS at the right time. I've had rides where I had to ride 50km just to get to the starting point.chriso_29er wrote:The thing that annoys me most is most of these the guys seem to actually be cyclist, but still do not remove a dodgy ride after being caught out. I don't get how people forget to hit the stop button and save the ride.

If I had to ride 50km to the start point, I'd have to turn around and go home, potentially calling for the sag wagon along the way too.g-boaf wrote:Why not just ride the bicycle over to the start of the ride, and then there is no worries about needing to turn off the GPS at the right time.
