Well got the results from the scan and there is a 3cm cyst there. :x The Dr though doesn't think that it is the cyst but pressure on a nerve that is causing the problem. I'm trying some magnesium and calcium tables to see if the eases the constant threat of cramping and will go from there. :|

May need to go and have this checked out again. This mornings ride after stopping for coffee and something to eat, it inflicted plenty of grief on me, why more than any other time. I just couldn't power up the leg without a string of naughty words flowing. :(

No and that is why I think I need to get it checked out again. It always lets me know it's there but this time no matter what I did, it did no relieve the pain.

Update on this mongrel thing. I'm going to push/dummy spit/rip a Drs head off  to have it syringed as it is driving me up the wall now and impacting to much on my riding.

Saw the Orthopedic Specialist today and the verdict is still not totally clear yet. It would seem however, that I may have a torn Medial Meniscus and this maybe the root cause of the problems. MRI scan is going to happen and a course of action, will taken from there.

well a Baker's Cyst is a symptom, not a cause. It occurs when you have an effusion in the knee joint. And an effusion happens when you have damaged tissue in the joint causing an inflammatory response with associated fluid ingress to the joint space.
So draining a cyst often only gives temporary pressure relief. When you go stir up the damaged tissue again, the swelling starts all over again.

For a guy your age, I'd put money on the medial meniscus being a mess. There's a few orthopedic tests the surgeon could have done in less than 60 seconds to confirm....but some don't like to get their hands dirty, unless in theatre. Transverse tears often have no other symptoms apart from an effusion with activity. The surgeon will most likely offer to trim or remove the meniscus arthroscopically. But that won't necessarily get you pain free on the bike.

What, you sayin I'm old? :P

He did some movement tests and pressure tests and said I still have good mobility and condition in my knees, for my age.

Oh and he wants me to have a hard ride before the MRI so he can see what's happening under load.

you also have damaged tissue that's been causing a recurrent effusion! :D
I know some surgeons would advise not to ride hard before hand because it will just light up everything! but it's his call.

I'm curious, CK! I would have thought that you would (not you personally) want to see how things were reacting when, the area was aggravated when put under load? :? Not having a crack at you, just curious for info. :)

have a crack at me... everyone else does :)

if the knee is painful at the drop of a hat, then the pathology should be clear without stirring it up.
the risk of going for a hard ride is you will pull a lot of fluid into the joint, and activate a lot of inflammation, which is the source of 'lighting up' everything.
most orthopods won't do a mri in the early stages of a traumatic joint injury because everything is 'hot' or lit up. To get a clearer picture of which tissue is damaged, it helps to wait for the inflammation to calm down.

anyway, the guy might know something others don't...or he might request a certain T1/2 weighting from the radiologist.
and keep in mind a MRI is only as accurate as the radiologist's interpretation.

Interestingly, I think services like this will become more common in the future.

I just see so much compromised health care these days. And my older GP mates agree.

I'm spending 6 hours next Saturday at St Andrew's hospital in Brisbane with 4 orthopods and various sports specialists, and this Wed night with 5 shoulder specialists....so will raise the hot mri thing with both groups :)

Ok thanks but mine is not painful all the time and there is no set pattern for it to play up, as I look for patterns when I have physical problems that occur. If I see a pattern, then I look for ways of working around it but I notice the tightness there all the time, it just doesn't give me curry when riding every time. :? I can PM his name to you and see if he is at this seminar.

if he's a Brisbane or Redcliffe Peninsula orthopod, I'll know him.

if your knee plays up intermittently, that's pretty much what many meniscal tears do. when they tear, they can have a loose flap, and sometimes the flap will fold over or bunch on itself. causing pain. fluid leakage can be constant due to irritating the tissue every time you stand walk.

you may also have some loose or damaged cartilage on the end of the femur, esp on the medial side where the meniscus is damaged. (the meniscus when healthy acts as a cushion to preserve the cartilage.

Foo, I spoke with a sharp ortho tonight. he said it's ok to stir your knee up immediately before MR imaging...as long as you do an MR arthrogram.

This is where gadolinium dye is taken to contrast enhance the most recent damage. Talk to your dr about gado MR. gado can be given orally or injection. and ask about toxicity!

The verdict is.........half the gristle is gone from under the knee cap, I have a cyst in the bone but is of no concern. Plus there is no op to take place. :D

I have been told that my knee is good for at least another ten years, yaaay so that means I can now hook in, with the help of some anti inflammatories to control the pain and discomfort. 8) Happy dance!

That is good news however.........
The knee is good for ten years if you give it a good hiding? Or is it good for ten years if you take it very gently?
