I don't think many of us start this process with any confidence that it's really going to work for us this time... nor with the inclination to take photos showing off how bad things have got.
Not true at all in my case. I knew it was time to make real changes, and was confident that riding was going to help me get there. Didn't perhaps realise that I'd be 'into' it as much as I am.

As for photos; I never envisaged that I'd be documenting my journey and so I don't really have any 'before' photos taken specifically for that purpose. Perhaps in the new year when I reach my first milestone I'll go back through my archives and see if there's any particularly incriminating ones that do highlight the progress I've made. 10kg won't be anything amazing but possibly mildly interesting.

Eating frugally today in preparation for a supplier-funded xmas dinner tonight. The only graft and corruption I get to indulge in every year. My desk is starting to look pretty tasty right now... must be time for another cup of tea...

Have made major lifestyle changes this year involving a sea change, and full transition out of my old job & into a new one with the same company (it has been a long slow transition to get someone else permanently appointed to my old role so I can ove fully across to the new one).

As part of the sea change I am now back on the bike, mainly as recreation, utility riding and multi-modal commuting, but with a bit of fitness riding thrown in.

Current weight 85kg
Target weight 75kg

12 weeks into it. And have lost 8.5 kg, ie am down to 76.5kg. I wonder if I can get to 75 by Christmas? Given the number of "events" involving drinks and food between now and then I am not confident, but am pretty happy with progress to date.

I've hit a wall atm and it's not going to get easier before the new year. Into my 6th month now and my rides - despite getting longer - don't seem to have as much impact on my weight as they once did. Not sure if it's a temporary, albeit natural, plateau or I've been a little more free and easy with the calories than I realise!?! Not panicking yet but would like to shed just a couple of kg before the new year... getting less and less likely as time marches on.

Anyone else had periods of (seemingly inexplicable) little to no loss? How long did they last, and how did you get past them?

Hearing you on the plateau mate. End of November and start of December has so far been a bit average intake wise 5 or 6 good days and then one blow out with a christmas function etc.

That said last weigh in was late November at 119.4, and this AM was 118.8.

I was feeling much the same way last week, but have just kept at it. Not getting as much riding in at the moment but certainly at the gym 4 days a week plus 2 rides usually.

Think it's more a state of mind than anything - for me, after such great early results it was always going to taper I spose!

I think it's quite common to have plateaus in weight. In my own fluctuations over the years, I've noticed particular weights where I get stuck on, both in putting on weight and in losing it. The particularly dogged one for me was at a BMI of 27 (83 kg). Once I finally broke through this barrier, I lost 0.5kg/week until I hit 76kg (25 point something BMI), which seemed to be another plateau. I broke through that one eventually too, but there's only been a gradual further drop to 74kg. What seemed to help me break through was doing a month or so of more varied and intensive cycling - to break through 83kg I increased my weekly kms from around 150 to 250-350, including a number of 70-100+km rides. After that, the standard 150-200km/week was enough to keep the weight falling off. I wasn't really intending to push for getting under 76kg, but it happened after a month of 450+ weeks.

brawlo wrote:So perhaps I should have a stab at this this year. This morning weighed in at 115.7kg, looking to get to at least 110 or better.

I was pretty complacent the last year and a half in respect to weight loss. I made big inroads to upping my bike time and even took on a training schedule mid last year. My focus is track, and so I have been spending time on the weights to increase strength as well as increasing bike fitness. Back in 2012, I had hit 120kg, down from 140kg+ in 2010. Over the last year and a half, with the increase workload, I had kept level at 120kg, but had traded a lot of body fat for muscle. So turning into 2014, I have made a point of eating better. No diets, just watching what I eat more diligently. So far, since Aust day long weekend, I have dropped from just over 120kg to the current 115.7 this morning. But, this year, I want to make some strength gains and am wondering if that may mean I have trouble descending the scale. We will just have to wait and see, but I have high hopes!
I find it interesting looking back over where I was at the start of the year and what I had mapped out for myself. Back in June I weighed in at 116.4kg. Back on 13th Oct I weighed in at 120.4kg. I wasn't eating badly, just not so strict on eating well. I was at the end of a winter of 4x weights sessions per week and that is where the weight gain came from because I was continuing to drop size/fat. On 13th Oct, I bagan taking a stab at the 5:2 Fast Diet. The intent was not for weight loss, but rather the other benefits touted. I have enjoyed taking this on as it's not like a regular diet where you need to be strict all through the week. I take a time out so to speak for 2 days a week, and after being initially apprehensive, I have found it quite easy. Anyway, as of this morning, I have hit 111.9kg, so dropping about 1kg/week. Despite the diet, I have still been racing our short summer road courses (20-25km) each week and also racing track each Friday night. I'm still getting faster, with my F200 time 2 weeks ago improving by 0.4sec on early in the season. So it looks like I could actually realistically reach my goal of 110kg for the year!

Thanks for the feedback to my question on plateauing. I've somehow managed to break through it in the last week or so; in fact had my 2nd lightest result on the scales this morning, just 100g more than my last 'successful' weigh-in about 6 weeks ago. My weight training is also becoming more 'evident' as I shed some body fat and inevitably build more muscle mass. I'm mid-way through my 6th month of training after a 6 month lay-off due to a disc bulge, but yet to reach the weights I was doing previously due to a purposefully slow build-up. It's a long, slow road... ;)

Summary as I doubt I'll lose much more weight:

Started in Sep 2013 at ~82Kg or a BMI of 27.4.

As of today I'm 64.3Kg or a BMI of 21.5, so I'm about the same weight I was as a teenager. My original goal was 70Kg and I didn't really think I'd achieve it. Just goes to show how powerful diet changes can be, since I exercise less now than I did before I started.

Whoops, have not posted in this thread for a while but I am amazed by everybody's progress. I thought I would show what 3000klm on a bike in 6 months can do (should have been more but I only managed 2 rides - 71klm -between 12/8 &12/9 due to nasty chest malarkies). Check out the time improvements! Times were captured in rides that month and note that the events are all on the same route. I have also put total monthly klm next to weight

Start 11/6 - 116.6kg. June = 5 rides for 160k
32klm 1:09.47
Best 40 N/A

11/7 - 112.7kg. July = 9 rides for 362k
32klm 1:08.12
Best 40klm 1:29.07

11/8 - 109.2kg August = 7 rides for 340k
32klm 1:03.01
Best 40k 1:19.32

11/9 - 106.6kg Sept = 9 rides for 322k
32klm 59.22
Best 40k 1:15.59

16/10 - 105.9kg Oct = 13 rides for 530k
32klm 58.44
Best 40 1:14.17

16/11 104.7kg Nov = 18 rides for 782klm
32klm 58.44
Best 40k N/A

16/12 103.2kg (my 40th birthday ha ha) Dec to date = 14 rides for 573k
32klm 56.11(today!!!)
Best 40k 1:10.43

I am chuffed with improvements, although I think some of added gains can be attributed to new wheels, chain & cassette.

I wanted to be 100kg by end of year but looks like I will just miss.

Spend 3 days in hospital being intermittently fasted for possible surgery each day - I just lost close to 2kg with that!! It ain't pleasant but a touch better than lopping your head off!! ;)

Weight now 75 kg

Height 173 cm

I'm 55. When I was married in 1986 I weighted 60 kg - I have a lean build.

Even 75 kg is too heavy, my goal is 70.

I haven't made any significant dietary changes - less beer and coke. Cycle for about 5 hours a week.
here we are at the end of 2014.

Weight is now 76 kg but make up is completely changed. Much more muscle much less fat. Work mates have commented that after only a week of not seeing me I appear to have lost more weight.

I'm now riding shorter distances (50km) but lots more hills and upped the intensity. Can really feel the strength (and size) in my legs increase.

So I'm definitely burning fat and increasing muscle. Diet is OK, except for chocolate teddy bear biscuits

at 55 my vitals are good according to my GP, except for my weight. He thinks for my height I should be 70kg. I could be if I stopped riding and ate nothing but fruit n veg... no thanks  :?

Wrap up time. I lost 10kg this year...really since August when I got serious. Shame it took 8 months to get serious!!

Goal for next year is another 10 down, but that will be rehab dependent. I've found that diet and rehab don't mix well, yet rehab and chocolate cake seems to work :(

My way of getting rid of a few kilos was more riding - fast. I did a 450km week last week after heaps of 290-330km weeks. Being at home and not eating takeaway foods from near my office helps. Lighter breakfasts too. I have dropped down now to 58-59kg, but I'm thwarted by a return of a calf strain. I'll have to take my medicine and rest up for perhaps the rest of the week.

Back in September, I had plans to get down from 93 to sub 80 in time for TDU.
I got down to 84, then rebounded some, and will finish the year at 85.
Will recommit to alcohol and junk food free, and portion control for the new year.

I've also been told 70Kg for our height by a naturopath, who said I was a medium build. Doing a waist-hip ratio measurement may give a better general health risk determination. I believe 0.9 or less for men is considered lower risk.

I also went down to about 75Kg many years ago when I started exercising, but regained the weight back to about 82Kg over the following years while doing even more exercise. In the end, diet change was the only thing that has made a long term and significant difference.

Did the GP actually tell you what the vitals were? My old GP once told me not to worry about a total cholesterol of 6.5, saying that it was the previous limit. The danger with that advice was that even the current limit of 5.0 has been proven to be too high for those people susceptible to heart disease, according to Dr Esselstyn from the research and patient studies he has done. He considers lower than 3.88 mmol/L (150 mg/dL) to be safe.

I'm finding that not sitting behind a desk for 5 days of the week is making a big difference. Like the week or so I spent in Fiji, I've been on holidays bouncing on the trampoline with my daughter and generally chasing her around the house and despite generous amounts of alcohol and dessert every night I'm still losing a little bit of weight!!! :O I think I need to give up the day job and become primary carer for my daughter, and watch the kg melt away! ;)

Official progress update and goals for 2015 (which I formulated tonight in a (citronella) candle-lit evening on the back deck with my wife) in the new year!

Holy crap, 58kg  How tall are you?

I've made a resoulution for next year to have a real go at getting down to my pre-wife/post army Recon course weight, of 68kg.

It might be hard as I don't really drink alcohol or fizzy drinks. I eat reasonable healthy, little red meat and a lot of vegetarian, my wife is a vego. The only way I can see myself pulling this off is to really cut back on the refined sugar (which is not really that huge these days) and stop eating the families left overs at tea time  . Oh and hopefully up the milage to 250km a week.

When does the BNA losers Club for 2015 start?
