Any Recommendations for a good Bike fitter Melb East Suburbs

Postby rodneycc » Mon Aug 04, 2014 4:28 pm

Time to take the plunge on a better bike fit I think. I already know my knees and ankles are pretty shot and know the drill about Saddle height and cleat placements for different kinds of knee pains but anyone got any good Recommendations for bike fitters in the Eastern Subs of Melbourne? I've had 3 LBS bike fits already on their trainer over the last couple of years just to check things and they all say my bikes check out for my sizing and fit but think there still might be something not quite right so I'm guessing its small adjusts needed by a specialist.

Cheers Rod.

Try riding without clip in shoes for a while?

yeah I probably could do that to narrow down the problem a little i.e take the cleats out of the equation. Funny that the 29er with the flat pedals isn't causing me as much issues as the 3 roadies but then again the 29er has the 30 speed triple with a much easier spin on the climbs so prob not a good comparison.

I'm also running both speedplay zeros and light actions with the float all the way open on the zeros and while I don't suspect that is the issue maybe the cleat position too far inside rather than centered could be the issue for the medial inner knee pain I sometimes can get. (I was about to trial the cleat more centered on my next lot of rides)

They have a good name and work out of Mitcham, but have a shop in Springvale Waverly as well. I have heard they are good but no personal contact by me.

yeah was more looking at a health professional type service rather than another LBS. My LBS has done an OK job with their trainer and their plumb bob job at fitting me on all 3 roadie's (which they didn't sell to me btw so their service in that regard has been great). I think most LBS's do similar fittings but I was wanting a more scientific approach I guess.

Edit: Actually just saw Cyclescience's Body Geometry fit service. yeah that's something I might follow up on. Thanks mate - I missed that first time around. Anyone else had this done?

I thought that BG Fit was a Specialized dealer / proprietry fitting system?

Had a quick squizz on the CycleScience website, but it seems it hasnt been updated for a few years.
Nevertheless, there should be plenty of info on BG fitting out there on the net, so have a search and go nuts!
You can decide for yourself whether its worth doing.

Yeah, I would... Admittedly I dont know too much about it, but I have seen snippets of info here and there.

I guess like any fitting system (retul, plumbob and ruler at the LBS, physio that takes your Musculoskeletal composition and history into account or whatever else), it is probably only as good as the operator is experienced in using it. It probably has its pro's and con's... You can guarantee that some out there will have loved it, and some have probably hated it, but do some reading and see if it lines up with your expectations.

Without knowing more, the only other hesitation I may have toward BG fitting is that it would obviously promote Specialized products as being those that will fix whatever issues you have (shoes, saddle etc), when there are probably as good products out there made by other companies.

I went and saw Mark just last week, Nice guy and seems pretty knowledgable. I was having a bit of forefoot numbness so was keen on the fact that he was a qualified podiatrist as well. Early days yet, but I rode 200kms Sunday with no issues. Overall I was quite satisfied with the fit. This was my 3rd fit in 20 years. (last one was retul about 2 years ago which I though was pretty unsatisfactory- just numbers and angles off a computer really)

I'm also using speedplays- but for me, cleats went out and back, which feels more solid and 'straighter' with my pedaling. Seat higher and slightly forward, and some arch support orthotics (and I need pilates and a good physio to work of my pelvic twist  ) He was pretty thorough I thought- it took around 2.5 hours! he checked flexibility, strength, leg lengths, symmetry on the bike, took photos, checked angles, had spinscan thingy checking power balance /pedalling efficiency,& I got bike setup measurements for the rest of the fleet. I'd recommend him.

Thanks Gassy. Sounds like the guy to look up if I go that way. Might try those cleats back first.

Thought I'd chine in for any future riders wanting a fit...

I saw Michelle Blake this week at The Sports Injury Clinic in Frankston for a bike fitting...very informative.

I learn't that I have long thighs and also confirmed a few thoughts I had with regards to my body type...she will listen to any ideas you may have and will explain why you feel the things you do on a bike...I'd happily recommend seeing her!

A few years ago I had knee trouble and was referred to Dominic Briscombe by someone at Abbottsford cycles. He is an osteopath and a cyclist. He did various measurements and said the bike was okay. He then gave my legs an incredible massage which somehow sorted my knee issue. Perhaps a good deep massage would help.

Was clicking around on CyclingTips this morning and came across this article on the BG fitting system, Rodney...
http://cyclingtips.com.au/2011/03/bike- ... -worth-it/

Admittedly, Im not sure how close you are to Richmond or St Kilda, but it provides some detail on another vendor of the BG Fit system so you know what the system is like / involves and might cost etc.

Thanks mate, yes I had read that one. It does still have specialized plastered all over the place but yes that's the article That got me thinking about doing the body fit and with their reference to speedplays thst I use as well.

I've actually been off the bike a couple of weeks due to illness and the knees actually feel great so we might slowly build up the load this time and see how we go.

I considered a BG fitting but went for a physio that could fit and was under my health cover...I wasn't prepared to fork out another $350...

Lucas Owen is a good physio out Bulleen way. does a few articles for the cycling mags and knows his stuff. I see that he's doing Retul bike fits now. He'd possibly be another decent option.

I always ride past his studio, looks like a decent set-up. Was there much of a hard sell on new stems, wedges and everything or he just fits you to your bike?

Lucas performed a Retul fit for me as I had some knee pain. Previous to that, I had already been fittedby Gary Cunliffe(?) at Olympic sports medicine. The retul fit showed that my seat height was bang on but that my cleats were too splayed so Lucas straightend out the cleats to reduce the angle. I haven't had any knee issues since and have been able to ramp up my training and load since with no issues.

He's also a physio so the retul fit can be claimed on private health if you're covered.

Since my fit through Michelle Blake at TSIC I've noticed muscles unused coming into play equally ...glutes, VMO's, hamstrings and abs...also doing Pilates to help with an inactive left glute. Fitting yourself on a bike by feel just doesn't work...
