Hunger

Postby liamb » Fri Oct 10, 2014 10:25 pm

Hi All

Bit of a weird one here but maybe someone has some ideas.
For as long as I can remember I have had a small appetite and have never really found my self starving (ie feeling really hungry). For some reason over the last month I have found myself feeling extremely hungry throughout the day and eating much larger amounts of food. When I say hungry I mean it is messing with my concentration, stopping me working and generally messing up my day, it sometimes results in me grabbing rubbish food like sweet biscuits, buns, or crap food. As a result I seem to be packing on the Kg's. In the past my weight has never really varied more than 1 or 2 kg either way at worst. At the moment I am 4kg over my average (last 6 years) of 63kg. I understand that some of the foods I have been consuming have been not ideal but in general I have a very healthy diet due to being a Type 1 diabetic. I hate junk food (cant stomach it) I dont eat chips or snack biscuits and I try to avoid over processed foods as much as possible. My preferred foods are fruit (huge amounts) nuts, veg, pork, chicken and fish.
My job has me sitting in-front of a PC for up to 10 hours per day, so I commute (24km each way at a fast pace) 3 times a week if possible and swim between 2 - 2.7km twice a week and ride on the weekends (short sprint hill climbs on Sat and long rides on Sundays) . I have been doing this consistently for about 3 years with no change in my hunger or diet. I have had a few illnesses and general times of fatigue but in general things have been pretty consistent. Most mornings I try to have porridge or muesli for brekie, snack on apples/pears/bananas dried fruit and nuts in the morning. Salad with tuna or meat salad rolls, yogurt, and fruit for lunch. Snack on fruit or shredded wheat biscuits or dried fruit and nuts in the arvo and dinner is really pot luck depending on swimming/ kids/ whats in the fridge/ or if the wife is home or working. (I do all the cooking but if the wife is not home Dad and the kids get creative!!) I drink about 3 cups of coffee throughout the day and try to drink about 1.5L - 2L of flavored water per day
I am looking for suggestions as to either how to stop the hunger not sure if its possible, or have snacks that are not full of carbs and fat.I have tried to push harder on the bike and in the pool but all that does is make the hunger worse. I am no where near over weight but I am trying to prevent things getting out of control.

Have you checked you blood sugars when the hunger is most intense?

There is a whole section on hunger and blood sugar in grant peterson's book "just ride", might be of interest.

Mulger bill, I always ensure I am hydrated, including what I drink through out the day sitting in an office, I consume a 750ml camelback on the ride each way to the office or site plus drinking at home.
Mataji. My BLS has never low when I am feeling the extreme hunger. That was the first thing I checked as recommended by my specialist.
Checked with a doctor (no answer for the problem) and booked into see a Sports Dietitian to see if there is something to work on.

Coming at it from a different angle ..... did anything change a month ago? Work - more stressful or more boring? Recent illness? Different brand of porridge/muesli? Try and think of anything, no matter how trivial it may seem.
