Not everyone thinks they need protein powder, for example one user called singlespeedscott suggests that this stuff is just a marketing scam.

Too much time? Totally going to change my opinion based on one comment lacking any reference material.

I love a protein bar, nothing better than that meaty taste with my chocolate

I've been making my own beef jerky/biltong lately for additional daily protein.
Pros : Tasty, cheaper than protein bars, very little fat/carbs, a good snack
Cons : Can be expensive, very time consuming, everyone at work wants to eat it

I'd go this and a choc flavored Oak over some silly whey powder. I don't ride enough to warrant it's supposed benefits. All those that I see take it look like they could lose 15kg in body fat rather than trying to gain some supposed muscle mass. Just eat a healthy diet and you'll be fine.

Pretty much the stupidest comment I've read in a long time.
Water is probably a scam too?

I have really ramped up my protein intake over the last 4 weeks as part of my training and operation ex fat bastard. Losing fat and putting on lean muscle.

Also oak is full of sugar over a powder.

I dunno, I'm going to count MB's inquiry about beer as anti-protein...
Nope, I just ride my bike... :D

Because I can see it.

I'm also doing resistance training as well as the bike. Guns for the arms and legs.

Also, if your waist is getting smaller but you are staying the same weight or getting heavier, you are putting on muscle. I have dropped a belt loop but have stayed the same weight. I can see my waist is smaller too. Pretty good. :D

How do you know it's not just muscle being made more obvious because you have removed the fat covering it?

Exactly- I want sugar and protein for my post ride drinks- prefer the banana smoothie option but the chocolate milk option is a recognised recovery product along with being cheap and accessible. Recovery is about glycogen and protein (4:1 Ratio) - low carb protein drinks is for the muscleheads or anti carb god botherers

Size (girth) has increased as well as definition.

There has been an few studies that dispel the myth that you cannot lose body fat and build muscle at the same time.

Here are a couple of abstracts.

I thought that. You only asked what the worst tasting one was...not a discussion of the merits of ingesting it.

I'd have to say the Pea Protein chocolate flavour is the worst. It doesn't taste like chocolate and never dissolves...ever. No wonder it was super cheap when I bought it. Was binned after 2 attempts to ingest. Pureed beetles would taste better than that stuff.

I've been taking protein powder for a number of years now, not for mass increasing, but to aid in recovery. A long road of trial and error has shown that the stuff really does work well for me and makes the soreness in my muscles subside much quicker than without. In saying that, I only take it after a weights session and after a hard racing or group riding. Typical fast but not hard rides don't warrant the use of it for my case.

I started off with Optimum Nutrition's gold standard which was really nice. I chose that based on many reports that put it at or near the top of a list based on taste. It was great, but plenty of reports as to the long term effects of WPI on your kidneys had me searching for an alternative. After attempting to fill the void with just food, and then spirulina powder (this stuff absolutely has to take the cake for bad tasting - but it's pretty high in protein content - 60%ish), I stumbled across Bulk Nutrients' Pea Protein in vanilla flavour and have been using that for a couple of years now. I like the taste, the consistency isn't too bad and it does the job.

Getting back on track.

The powder I use is universal red chocolate, it mixes well and tastes good. I only mix it with water and it is still tasty.

Works out to $1 a serve.
