hi
have been on an autoset S9 for a while now and am now having problems with the mask. I have a f&p nose mask. My problem is the mask strap and in particular the velcrose not hanging on anymore. This causes the mask to come loose overnight. The mask is approx two years old, and the silicon is fine. Its the strap thats rubbish. I have washed the strap in the washing machine, in a pantyhose bag, and this shouldnt affect the strap.
Have pthers expirenced the strap problems, and if so, what have they done about it?
cheers

Velcro does lose it's grip over time. I'm not familiar with CPAP masks, so I googled it - is your mask the one that has the neoprene strap that goes around the head and attaches at the forehead and on the mask? If so, it should be a simple matter for somebody handy with a needle to replace the velcro.

While replacing the velcro will work, in my experience the neoprene won't last much longer. One of the things I like about the f&p masks is that individual parts are available. I don't think the replacement strap was very expensive

hi matagi and bruce,
thanks for the replies. Looking at where the velcrose is currently sewn on, i reckon sewing new velcrose should be achievable.
I didnt realise the f&p strap was avaliable, and will def check that out as well.
A new mask is not cheap, but being able to buy the strap is handy.
cheers

I've never had that problem, V17L so not sure of what advice I can give but have you tried double sided tape with new velcro?

hi foo,
hadn't thought of double side tape and velcrose. Good thinking 99.
As you don't change the position of the strap much, i thought of using electrical tape to lock everything down. F&p mask has a plastic hook to connrct the strap to the mask, so tapeing it up would be a bodgey way of achieving the same thing
cheers

Those straps begin to stretch and disintegrate after about 2 years use as they have to support your heavy head whilst sleeping and tossing and turning against the fabric of your pillow.
I find the straps stretch too much before the velcro gives up.
I'm using the mirage brand of masks and you can buy the new straps seperatley. They are not real expensive.
Whilst most cpaps can operate using ac & dc, i wanna know how i can take mine cycle camping....might have to leave it at home...lucky most of Australian animals are nocturnal otherwise they won't be getting much sleep when i'm out campi ng
Cheers

hi dave,
I use a resmed s9 at home, and have used it travelling to malaysia last year, not to mention many road trips in aus. If i had mains i could use it, with no main, obviously couldnt, and slept the night without the machine. Didnt kill me, but as you say those around suffered.
This trip to europe for cycle touring has meant me looking into this very topic of battery operation. In the end i purchased the transend battery operated beast with the p8 battery. Slightly noisier than the s9 but nothing to write home about. The unit does not have a humidifier as standar, as humidifiers chew thru the juice. Battery life depends on you machine setting. I reckon i can get two nights on a charge. YMMV.
Using the transcend has been no diferent to the s9 and is about 2kg or so. To be honest havent weighed it, i just went on the size and convience of the unit. The transcend doesnt have rubber feet to stop it sliding, and it is really light. I place it in the case it comes with, including the battery and it remains in place when using it.
It also comes with changible plugs, so no messing round finding adaptors when overseas to charge the battery. Fits into my pannier, but does take up bout half of my ortleib pannier though.
hope this helps
cheers

Hi Steve,
I was using a Resmed S8 Autoset but after about 8 years, the buttons were starting to fail although the machine was still going ok but a deal for a new Fisher & Paykel Auto Machine come up as they offered $150 trade-in on any used machine so I took advantage of that coz I wasn't going to get any money back otherwise....although luckily my health fund gave me $600.
Bloody health funds won't give any rebate on masks and hoses but without them, the treatment won't work. They classify them as "consumerables" Dunno why coz ya can't eat them
I've put up a big fight with my health fund over it but absolutely none o them cover the masks and hoses.
I think if the health funs stop subsidizing 20 something's bloody Nike shoes and cover what is essential equipment ie: Cpap masks and hoses.....it'd be good.
Yeah I did look into some battery set-up for cpap.....I wish there was something else apnea sufferers can do temporarily whilst camping. I've thought about buying one of those head strap things from the internet that is supposed to pull lower jaw slightly forward to keep airways clear....I've got a bit of a clicky jaw on the right side....so am a bit concerned.
Sounds as though you've done some camping with a bicycle and coped....I suppose if you stayed in a powered room every 3rd night and got a good sleep with the machine...it'll get you through for a couple of days.
It's trying to avoid having low energy levels due to lack of quality sleep is the main thing, especially if you've gotta be doing a few big long stretches on the bike. It's also the same thing that's stopped me from camping off the motorcycle too.
Cheers

Hi Dave,
I took some overseas visitors out to the rock and kings canyon, three days two nights without a cpap machine. I found that I wasnt actually that affected. I did all the driving and the body coped. I have a theory that if your body is well rested at night when using your cpap, then you can have a few nights without the machine without any adverse affects, as it takes a while for the body to run down from apnea. Now this is my theory, and I have a low setting, so not so severe. YMMV.
Whilst not camping on our trip at the moment, I am using the transend on battery, if the power pointbis not close by, negating me taking an extension cord in my bag. The reason I have the transend auto machine, is the convienence of packing and unpacking it.
Finally, I mentioned to a friend a while ago that i couldnt go bike touring cos of apnea, and the worry of not getting good sleep. He said dont let apnea stop you, you can always find a way if you want to do something. He was right, firstly with my theory, and secondly with the travel transend machine.
cheers

Only just saw this thread.
Regarding the head strap - +1 on replacing the material. I use a Resmed mask, and have purchased replacement neoprene straps. I bought from a USA website, combined purchase with a friend who also needs CPAP supplies helped save on shipping costs. Depending on what you need, you may still save money compared to buying locally. Also, don't forget to look on eBay for CPAP supplies - you might be able to get what you need at a reasonable price.
Also, I find that the mask fit changes throughout a haircut cycle (looser when just had a haircut, tighter when I need a haircut, but YMMV)
I have a mouth splint and I have seen the mandiublar mouth pieces that push your lower jaw out front. I think you might get a very, very sore jaw, and not much sleep (ineffective). Again, YMMV.
