Which bread is healthiest?
Postby zill » Sun Nov 08, 2015 11:52 am
By that I mean which bread does the most good to your body after eating it and make you satisfied for the longest.

By GI it should be pumpernickel. Pure rye is next best. Wholemeal is just as high as white bread. The denser the bread the better. You are probably going to have to go to a German bread shop to get something worthwhile.

As Nobody says - rye bread. Pumpernickel is made from a mixture of rye flour and coarse rye meal. Schwartzbrot (or black bread) is made from rye flour. Both these breads are quite solid and dense and you won't find any bread shop willing to slice them for you so unless you buy the prepackaged already sliced stuff, you will need a good quality serrated bread knife to cut it. It is a very dense bread and should be sliced fairly thinly. Useless for making toast, BTW. If you don't have an artisan baker nearby who bakes the stuff, try the kosher section of the supermarket (although you might need to look in an area where lots of Jews live)
I love the stuff, it is my bread of choice.

There's a bread called 'Scandavian Rye' I order in through a deli chain here in Perth (Miss Mauds) It's the colour of chocolate, and I can get it in sliced loaves. I usually order 4 loaves at a time and freeze them. Its hilarious some of the shop girls reaction when they go to pick up my two bags worth. it's heavy stuff. I find 2 slices easily as filling as 4 regular white/brown/wholegrain supermarket bread.

Pure Life sprouted grain bread. There's a few different flavours/grains.
My favourite has 4 ingredients, Bio-Dynamic Wheat, Rye, Dates & Walnuts.......that's it. You have to cut it with a wet knife. It weighs 1.1kg for a little loaf.

Gas propulsion.......it's natural don't fight it.

Pretty low generally I believe. 55 or below is considered low. But don't take my word for it, have a search below.zill wrote:Looks ugly! but will try it.Nobody wrote:By GI it should be pumpernickel.

By the way, I don't eat any of them. GI is only one factor and not overly important unless you have diabetes. But it is an objective measure of a bread that will likely keep you fuller for longer. All breads are still calorie dense so not necessarily the best foods if your aim is to lose weight. I wouldn't call them unhealthy though. For those doing plenty of exercise it may not be a problem.

I definitely limit my bread intake of all types when I'm not training hard or riding heaps. I've noticed that in down cycles any bread intake makes it very difficult for me to maintain weight
cheers

Zill, I can highly recommend Hope Farm Bakeries sourdough bread.
It's available from about 15 outlets in Melbourne or you can but it online, excellent quality and tasting bread;
