Yesterday it was above 30 degrees when riding, so no surprise my hydration is lower today.

Due to an unforeseen problem, my diet has had to change. Therefore I'm expecting my waist to increase by year end. So I have scrapped all goals to see what happens.

Less than 2 weeks to go until the end of the year. I'll be surprised if I can keep the low numbers above. At least I should easily be lower than my original goals.

Starting 2nd Jan:
Waist 74.5cm or WHtR 0.431
64.0kg or BMI 21.4

Maintenance goals:
Waist < 75.5cm or WHtR < 0.436
< 66kg or BMI < 22.1
My results show I've either learnt to be more committed and/or (more likely) learnt more about how to keep the weight down during the course of the year. Exercise is about the same. Since the 3 major variables for weight equilibrium are genetics, diet and exercise, that means it's been a win on the diet front for me.

As I suspected would be the case, December is proving to be a hiccup in my progress. I haven't quite gone backwards, but despite a good start in the 1st week, 21 days into the month and I'm still slightly above my lightest for November, though still below last month's final weigh-in.

Aside from a few short commutes, I've only done a single ride this month. I've also slipped a week in my weight training schedule. I have been doing plenty of manual labor in the yard getting things ready for the kids' Xmas, but by the same token I've been over-compensating with the odd energy drink and have also had a few social engagements where bad food was plentiful.

At this stage I'll be happy if I can maintain my standing at the end of November. I am supposed to be finishing up work tomorrow until 17th Jan, so perhaps I can squeeze in a few more rides (only 27km short of 5,000km for me right now!) I realise weight loss is more about diet than exercise, but personally I find it easier to keep my diet under control when I'm doing regular exercise.

Waist still increasing. I doubt it will stabilize before end of year.
Surprised that weight hasn't followed as quickly considering that it led the change when reducing weight.

In what was very likely my last ride for 2016, I managed to reach the 5,000km (since I bought my bike mid-2014) mark. Not exactly impressive by any stretch of the imagination, but a milestone I'm happy to have reached this calendar year.

Weight is also at my lowest - a surprise after several Xmas festivities - so I didn't do too much damage. ;)

Not bad. I don't think I did that much riding this year. I don't track my km as I don't even have a computer on my bike anymore. It helps me get out the door because I can't compete with myself. Which is especially useful as I'm getting older at almost 49 yo.

You may have had your goal in the back of your mind during festivities. Mine isn't my lowest, but since I was likely protein deficient then (from my blood test results) I'm probably better off a bit heavier. I'm still at least 7 kg lighter than these results of ideal weight for height calculations. I'm even lighter than ideal for a woman of my height. So light enough.

Today:
Waist 72.5 cm, WHtR 0.419
Down 0.75

Weight 59.9 kg, BMI 20.0
Down 0.4

Typical of some hot summer days yesterday. Too hot to cook, too busy to eat enough. Hot again today in Sydney.

1 day to go.

I'm the exact opposite; I find tracking my rides motivating. Much like my weights program - many years ago I started out with one of those freebie 'tailored' programs you get when you join a gym. I was mindlessly using machines with random weights and had no idea whether I was making any progress at all. It was boring me stupid. Fortunately a friend who lifted took me under his wing and now every gym session is recorded in my log book, as it has been for over a decade. Guess I'm a stats junkie?!? Also, 50 here.

I'm a long way off my ideal weight, around 72kg. My next goal is 90kg.

It's unbearable here. I hate the humid heat of Sydney. :(

I'm probably one too, but for diet. As can be seen in the Plant Based Diet thread, I often track what I eat when at home on a spreadsheet. That sometimes gets transferred at the end of the day to Cronometer for nutrient checking. Along with daily weighing & measuring I slowly learn what works and what doesn't.

But at least you're moving in a healthy direction. :)

Went to a pool party yesterday and ate some snacks which had added salt. Ate late too, so no surprises. Still easily within goals. This year has been all over the place for me. I hope I'm more consistent next year.

End of month/year report - December 2016.

To recap briefly:
Jul'14 started riding at 114.5kg.
Jan'16: 106kg, heaviest this year 108.5kg when I returned from 2 weeks in the US.

End of September: 103.7kg.
End of October: 101.1kg.
End of November: 99.7kg (lightest 98.2).
End of December: 97.8kg (lightest 97.4).

A surprise ending to the year, which saw me reach 5,000km (since starting out - see above) just 2 days before year-end. Thought the festive season would take a bit more of a toll but in retrospect I didn't overindulge perhaps as much as I have in the past and although I wasn't riding, I was spending a decent amount of time out from behind a computer screen in the lead-up to Xmas.

I'm particularly happy with the progress I've made in the last half of the year since my return from the US in July. Before then I had been down to around 103kg but piled it back on before the trip and then 2 weeks of junk food was just the icing on the cake. However I'm now looking good to reach 95kg by mid-Feb as I promised my GP.

Given my current situation I've decided that a goal of 90kg by mid-2017 isn't unreasonable. Beyond that will depend - to a large degree - on how I look whilst standing naked in front of a mirror on 30th June. I intend to continue regardless, but just can't set a realistic goal at this point.

79kg, or a WHtR of 0.49 for a BMI/WHtR in the normal weight/OK range isn't unreasonable either considering it's about 26 weeks away. Losing 1 kg per week for most of that would get you there easily. One sure way to get to your goal is to aim higher (in fat loss) and put in place serious structural dietary changes. Like most people on these forums, it doesn't look like the exercise component is the problem.

Agree on that point. I was about 15kg over ideal weight when I started serious cycling 6 years ago and dropped 7-8kgs within 6 months, but have sat at that point ever since despite av. 10,000kms per year.

A short pre Xmas reduction in sugary intake (mainly honey/jam toast with brekky), halving bread as well, and an increased intake of salads saw me drop 2 kgs in a month. So that, perhaps along with reduced mid-week alcohol, is my plan from here on.
2023 Target: 9.500kms/100,000m

I had a pretty poor experience with exercise alone. I initially lost about 7kg (BMI 27.4 to 25.1) then over 5 years I put it all back on. I was probably doing 6,000 km/year. With the diet changes I lost a max of 22.5kg and now I'm still 21kg lighter. All while doing less exercise than previously.
