Sweat from Indoor trainer lead to problems later in life?

Postby zill » Fri Jan 15, 2016 10:33 pm

Doing lots of indoor riding at the moment with a big fan. However, still sweating a lot. Water is therefore accumulating on my skin when riding intensely. I'm just afraid that with the fan also blowing, it would lead to problems later on in life. Is this true?

I have a friend who does a lot of sweaty trainer work. The main issue for him has been equipment damage. He corroded his alloy handlebars which broke coming down the 1:20 (he stayed upright). Also needed a card reader for his old Edge 800 as the USB port corroded too.

My question is about problems down the line such as in your 60s. i.e joint problems.

My logical brain says that if you exercise hard, you are going to sweat wherever you are - inside with a fan or outside with a breeze won't make a difference to any effects later in life. However, if you are overheating, or sweating more than you would normally, or somehow it just doesn't feel right, then you should ask the advice of a professional. Probably a sports specialist if not a doctor. They could probably tell you a whole bunch of things you could do to make training indoors better.
Yep, I have some bike.

The body is a bio-mechanical machine. By what mechanism do you expect this will cause joint problems?

What have you read or listened to that leads to this question?

If you are concerned about arthritis, there is a strong correlation with diet as some forms are considered an auto-immune disease. While all things fed by your vascular system can be affected by atherosclerosis in time (if you are genetically susceptible).

Bike fit, stretching and supporting muscle strength are also going to be considerations.

He's not over thinking. I was reading some research the other day that stated that 100% of people who sweat early in life, die at some point.
Sorry to say zill, but you're screwed mate.

My Dad always told me to dry well and immediately after taking a shower. Because trying to get dry by natural methods such as in a cool breeze is not good for you. How true is it?

Check out some of that Nordic research; out of the sauna, into the cold air or the ice cold plunge pool... wasn't there an epidemic of them spontaneously combusting?

I sweat and have dried myself by airflow rather than towelling on numerous occasions ... No dramas so far but I may not survive for ever ...

100% of people who breathe will actually die at some time. Two negatives make a positive. If you hold your breath, you'll be ok zill. But dont over do it ... only for as long as you are sweating

zill, mate. You need to get some help. You seem to take some kind of pleasure in finding things to worry about.

Well, here's a thing to really worry about. Worry itself causes serious health problems by raising stress hormones and releasing free radicals in the body that if left untreated has long term serious side effects.

Go see a cognitive behavioural therapist.

Guys, try and be a bit more polite.

Zill, where has your info come from? Have you done some research? For example this article https://www.aad.org/public/skin-hair-na ... aging-skin
Wash your face twice a day and after sweating heavily. Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, irritates the skin, so you want to wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating.
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

There is a huge resource available on the Internet before you go posting implausible stuff like that.
It doesn't take much effort to discount it. :/

This is rust.
It is caused by the reaction of iron with oxygen, typically in a damp environment.

Think what the oxygen you inhale in the damp environment of sweating on a trainer must be doing to your insides...

Or is it only if you ride a steel frame on the rollers?

My apologies ... you're 100% right mb. I completely missed this comment from Zill

I'm sure Zill totally loves his Dad, but if your parents have fed you BS like this (and possibly it was
just part of a constant stream fed to Zill), then they'll turn out pretty damaged people unable to
discriminate between fact and fiction. Turning to google will leave them even more hopelessly perplexed.

So take it a lesson for any prospective parents, grandparents and aunties or uncles, feed the off-spring
as little BS as possible ... and if you do string 'em along with a few fairy-tales (like Santa Claus),
make sure you don't play out the charade too long.
