Anyone drink beetroot juice before a ride?

Postby big booty » Sat Jan 16, 2016 2:51 pm

Had some beetroot juice about 30 minutes before my ride today. Man I was flying, set a PB for my 2 hour ride. Not sure if it was the beetroot of if I would have been flying in any case. Will be using it before my rides for sure and see what happens. Anyone else drink it before a ride?

I saw a DurianRider video on the topic once. That was enough to put me off the idea.

Just add some bacon extract to the juice if it makes you feel better. :D Seriously though give it a go, even if DR uses it.

Tried it once a while ago. Expense, effort and mess not worth it for me. Pre bottled sounds easier, not sure about cost though. Be prepared for a dark coloured pee afterwards.
Can't comment on performance gain because I don't always push hard, only that I didn't feel any different.

Can't you just get the juice out of the tinned stuff as well if you must get on the bandwagon?

Apparently celery has a comparable quantity of nitrates. More palatable in my opinion.
(Edit: I seem to recall from earlier reading the beetroot juice should be raw)

Beetroot juice is a dynamic laxative if you have too much of it fresh, can seriously test your powers of retention between cafès and therefore influence PBs.

Thats exactly what I did. Just added the tin of beetroot to my blender. It was still rather thick so I just added a splash of apple juice to dilute it a little bit. A slight vinegary taste but I can put up with. Just bought a jumbo can and blended it up and froze what I didn't need. Works out at about $1 a bottle compared to the Sunraysia version at $5 a bottle. :D

Less fudge, more chocolate sauce, maybe with a touch of red velvet..

A lot of science behind this. Been commercialised. Eg beet-it.com

Be careful using the tinned stuff, I was in woollies this morning and looked at a tin of no name baby beets. Sadly it has been laced with high fructose corn syrup. The perceived performance boost may in part be due to the added "white death".

Just checked. 10% sugar :( Will look around for other brands. Cross fingers someone can actually can beetroot without loading it up with sugar.

I couldn't find straight beetroot juice in my local shops either. Nudi seems to be the dominant brand in my area but only found a cocktail of partial Beetroot.
I asked at a juicing bar near to Central Station if they would juice beetroot and they said no. I'm guessing he didn't want to insult me with the cost.
I'm banished from the kitchen for making a mess last time, never easy unfortunately.

Done, found a supply at Chemist Warehouse this morning. $2 each for the shotz and $5 for a litre carton of juice.

Yes did that once a long time ago. Cost, time, effort and kitchen mess and clean up make it a hassle. $5 for a litre of 90% strength beetroot and 10% apple juice In a carton, I can't beat that.

Consumed said beetroot juice and went for a hard ride. Of course I got a tyre puncture, first one in ages actually, otherwise It felt like the juice may have given a "slight" improvement to my ride time. Not an all out effort on my part either but a good solid effort with a respectable ride time.
Will do a 10km jog on Saturday "juiced up" and see how that compares provided I don't strain a calf muscle or similar. Can't comment on the vaso-dilation effects, I have not measured BP, perhaps someone else can chime in with personal experience in this regard.

From memory the stuff works best with about a week of built up nitrate (I think). It acts as a buffer in a similar way to beta alanine does (I hope I have this right). One thing to be aware of, if you use mouthwash it negates the way your body processes the Beetroot (via tongue and saliva I think. Bacteria maybe?). This is all off the top of my head so please check.
I did just googled this - might be worth a read if you've got this far - sweatscience.com/how-nitrate-and-beets-work-and-why-mouthwash-is-bad/

And AIS approved. - http://www.ausport.gov.au/ais/nutrition ... nts/groupa" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I tried doing that as well. Didn't boil the beetroots. Tried to juice them raw. Big mess and just couldn't get it any finer then a grainy puree. Tasted great but it was like eating a hearty soup rather than drinking a juice. Must be cans of beetroot out there that don't have added sugar....maybe.

The nitrates are supposed to dilate your circulatory system allowing blood to flow less restricted. You're supposed to drink it between 30 to 50 minutes before effort.

That's as I understand it.
