Numb hands.

I apologise if this has been answered previously but I get numbness in my hands which seems to emanate from the heel of my hand from resting on the bars - which clearly one has to do. I want to do some longer rides but can't go for more than an hour without having to start shaking them out all the time. I have thought about a longer stem so there is more weight on my butt but then I become the dinosaur - u know the old joke.

ID please? What ID? My seat tube ID is 27.2mm or 31.6mm depending on what bikes I ride today.thanks...
