BNA Losers Club 2017

Postby Nobody » Sun Jan 01, 2017 7:27 am

Welcome to the BNA Losers Club 2017. A thread for people to post their goal weight/measurements and their progress.

Weight and Body Mass Index (BMI)
There is no problem with just posting weights alone, but it doesn't mean much to others. The same applies with waist measurements. So if you want others to know at what stage of weight loss you're at, I encourage you to give a height reference.
To make it easier to post body mass index (BMI), I've added a BMI calculator link below. To calculate manually, it is your weight (W) in kg, divided by the square of your height (Ht) in metres, or W / Ht^2.
BMI calculator.
feet/inches to cm converter.
The best time to measure your weight is first thing in the morning.

Waist and Waist to Height Ratio (WHtR)
Waist measurement is a more important general health indicator than weight/BMI due to being proportional to the amount of visceral (internal) fat one carries. Visceral fat is dangerous because it's metabolically/hormonally active. There is a strong relationship between the amount of visceral fat one carries and chronic diseases. Weight/BMI doesn't tell the whole story of weight loss, often due to increased muscle weight. Also particularly tall or short people are misrepresented by BMI. BMI was originally designed to study populations, not individuals. That is why I post waist and waist to height ratio (WHtR) first. WHtR is beneficial for others to know at what stage of weight loss you are at by body shape.
To make it easier to post WHtR, I've added a calculator link below. Although the ratio is easy to calculate since it's just your waist circumference in cm divided by your height in cm.
WHtR calculator.
The best time to take a waist measurement is first thing in the morning. It should be measured at the circumference point half way between your bottom rib and the top of your hip bone (where your belt runs). This is typically about 2.5 cm above your belly button.

Some information on waist to height ratio (WHtR) and why it's better than BMI for indicating health:

The argument for weighing yourself frequently
A two-year Cornell study, recently published in the Journal of Obesity, found that frequent self-weighing and tracking results on a chart were effective for both losing weight and keeping it off, especially for men.
The method “forces you to be aware of the connection between your eating and your weight,”
http://news.cornell.edu/stories/2015/06 ... your-favor
In conclusion, although there were methodological limitations to the studies reviewed, there was ample evidence for the consistent and significant positive relationship between self-monitoring diet, physical activity or weight and successful outcomes related to weight management.

Is diet or exercise the best for weight loss?
The three main factors that influence weight/waist are genetics, diet and exercise. Being a cycling forum, most will try to increase their exercise to lose weight. However the study below shows that diet is 78% and exercise is only 22% of the weight loss equation.
The following is from a the American Institute for Cancer Research blog which summarises a recent study comparing diet and exercise in weight loss.
After 12 months, women in the exercise group lost 2.4% of their body weight; diet only reduced by 8.5% and those exercising and dieting lost 10.8% of their weight. And the more they lost, the more their biomarkers were reduced.

Please use the Diet Thread to discuss diet. Some people object to diet being discussed here.

History from Sept 2013:
Waist 90cm, WHtR 0.52
82kg, BMI 27.4

Today:
Waist 73.5 cm, WHtR 0.425
60.7 kg, BMI 20.3

Maintenance Goal:
Waist < 74.4cm, WHtR < 0.43

This year's maintenance goal is tighter since I have more confidence I can keep under it.

No weight goal this year for me as weight is less important. If I meet my waist goal, I should be lean enough. Since I'm already considered to be lower than ideal weight for height, age and sex, according to ideal weight calculation versions in this calculator.

Thanks for giving WHtR a go. :)
From what you posted, it looks like your WHtR = 0.508 (99cm/195cm) which correlates to your BMI, since 0.5 approximates BMI 25 and 0.6 approximates BMI 30. At your height WHtR is probably a better indicator anyway.
Just as a comparison, the gardener at my work has a BMI of 26.5 and a WHtR of 0.51.

From the graphs above I need to lose about 20cm off my waist to be in the middle of 'OK' - or be a foot taller !! :P

I might aim for 10cm off the waist and maybe drop 5kgs. Seems doable, if recent (pre-Xmas  ) efforts are any guide.

Heard someone say recently "It's not what you eat/do between Xmas and NYE that matters, but what you eat/do between NYE and Xmas. that counts". Finishing off Xmas leftovers today....

OK, new year, new metrics! 8)

Started this journey mid-2014 at 114.5kg. As of 2017:

Weight = 98kg.
WtHR = 41.5*2.54/178 = 0.59 (take action) (albeit measured early afternoon)
BMI = 98/(1.78^2) = 30.93 (obese)

I suspect for me BMI will be a poor(er) indicator due to my weight training. I'll certainly be concerned more with WtHR in the coming year, and tracking BMI mostly for interest's sake.

My next goal is 90kg, and will be interested to see what effect that has on my WtHR. As it is, I have no concept at all how WtHR tracks with (my) weight loss, so it's impossible for me to set a goal in terms of that metric. From the graph, a 35" waist would put me in the "OK" category, which equates to a WtHR of 0.49.

If people get the other 51 weeks sorted, then they'll likely be more restrained in that last week anyway. So although it sounds like an excuse, it's probably quite true.

Yes, BMI should be a poor indicator for you. So you might as well focus on where it counts, where the visceral fat is.

0.49 for WHtR is a good goal IMO. Get out of the overweight danger zone. :)
So far I've found for me weight leads waist in loss and waist leads weight in gain.

From 2015 thread which you started I got 1.78m tall. So that makes a BMI of 24.9. So not overweight by BMI. Are you trying for 68 kg again?

Maybe 74kg might be more achievable and sustainable.

Measured my waist this morning and it was 82cm. So waist to height ratio is 0.46.

That WHtR confirms the suspicion I had in 2015 where I said you are probably just more heavily muscled and BMI is not a good indicator for you. 0.46 is a pretty good midrange number already, but closer to 0.42 is obviously better for some risk factors and as a cyclists it usually pays to be lighter. Especially in hot weather riding I find.

Thanks for the effort of posting WHtR and BMI. :)
The good news is that action will probably be rewarded well in weight/size loss initially at least.

_______________________________________________________________

Today:
Waist 73.5 cm, WHtR 0.425
Same
61.4 kg, BMI 20.5
Up 0.7

Since I ate late last night, I expected weight to be higher today. I don't usually post outliers, but I thought it would be a good example. The daily variability is one of the problems with measuring weight. You need to be able to control for eating times (which relates to toilet times), hydration and even glycogen stores. Something that's too inconvenient for people who exercise regularly. Although waist is also affected by all these factors, as a percentage it's less so in my experience.

The limit of reading with measuring waist is realistically 0.25 cm anyway considering it relies on subjectively consistent tension on the tape. I try to tension the tape to the same light tension by feel, then look to take the reading and round up to the next 0.25 cm.

I was 84.7kg this morning after four hard weeks of work on the new farm, and yesterday when I dressed for work for the first time in six weeks I have used the last (smallest) hole on my belt for the first time ever.

I'm in.
weight this morning 110 kegs
height 186 cm ( hey, i'm shrinking!)
BMI 31.8
WtHR 0.56 ( 104 cm)
History: 2011 i was down to <90 kgs, riding every day, climbing hard every 2nd day, and loving life. Peeps said i was starting to look gaunt though!
Since then i have struggled massively with work/life balance ( went back to study/ 3 young kids/ house renos....)
Now i barely fit into my cycling gear so have been riding my fixie or my SS MTB (in baggy clothes). Trouble is I can still ride.. banged out an imperial century in December with no prep and did SSWC MTB 'race' for 2 hours around wombat forest in late October.
But it's time to take action... New job/ career, kid's finally starting school.
i want to do something cycling related and extraordinary for my 50th in 2.5 years, so have started to watch intake and do daily weights session/HIT ( 3 days on, 1 off).
It's 39 degrees today , same tomorrow, so not worrying too much about cycling...

Height: 190cm
Weight: 108.2kg
BMI: 29.97
WtHR: 0.59 (112/190)

So woo hoo, I'm down from Obese to just plain old Overweight on the standard BMI chart. (Yes - I know the problems with it, but I want to have some sort of success!)

I weigh myself in the afternoon, after my commute home. I hope that gives me some sort of daily consistency. I've just measured my waist now, for the first time ever, so I hope that I got it right.

And I started at roughly 120kg in mid-2015, so I've done OK so far.

I'm thinking that it might be easier for me to grow another 10cm than lose 20 odd kg.
I really should take up cycling!

Nice work, congrats! I'm on the verge of breaking into "merely overweight" myself!

But first, heading up the coast tomorrow morning for a week of sitting at the beach and not worrying (too much) about my weight or my riding. I will try not to get too silly though... knowing what's in store for me when I get back!

I'll give you all some time to try your own plans. Later I plan to post a more comprehensive guide specifically aimed at weight loss which I'll post in the diet thread and link here.

Unlike the general results of previous years, I'd actually like to see more people get some significant reduction in weight/waist. Maybe it's an uncharacteristic thought of optimism on my part, but with both the will and a way, weight loss can happen. The hardest part will be convincing people on a cycling forum that diet is the major factor in long term weight management for most people.
For example:

You are right there with the weight loss.

Yeahhh still obese!!! Thought I would lost a little from the middle though. Maybe I didn't measure right in the first place.
I actually think that a lot of the weight loss is from not being overhydrated (if that is a thing) with beer during the Xmas period. I certainly haven't been starving myself.

Weight = 72kg
WtHR = 86cm / 168cm = 0.51
BMI = 25.8

I went from 93kg down to 72kg a few years ago.. Ever since then, I seemed to have reached a permanent weight loss plateau :(
My body composition may have improved ever so slightly, but I would prefer to lose more weight and tone up, particularly around the waist.

If you ate some salt, then your weight can increase from that. Water retention is usually 2500 times the sodium weight. So it doesn't take too much salt to add some kilos.

Interesting that quite a number of cyclists have a WHtR around 0.5. Mine was 0.52 (BMI 27.4) before I changed my diet.
