Hand ganglion

Postby Noviss » Tue May 23, 2017 8:29 pm

Dr Google tells me that the lump that has appeared between my right hand thumb and forefinger is a ganglion. Given that it is at the point that rubs on the hoods I am guessing it is cycling related. Is this a common injury? If I go and have the ganglion aspirated is there anything I can do to avoid future flare ups?

Ganglions can also be caused by joint strain, so not necessarily a cycling injury. Often they'll subside by themselves over time, but if they persists and cause discomfort then aspiration may be worthwhile.

I had one on my left wrist near the base of the thumb. Popped up for a while, then disappeared for a while, popped up again, before disappearing apparently for good.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Same spot for me Duck! Put up with it for a while and didn't go away and doc told me to hit it with a hard book. Went away, came back rinse repeat. Went away for a few years.
One day doing weights I felt this impingement in my wrist. Another ganglion this time in my wrist joint! That one was day surgery to remove as I could barely move my hand

?
Anterior cruciate?

Anyway, ganglions are outpouchings of the joint capsule - most common on the back of your dominant wrist. They're not an injury, but represent joint use. Stop using the joint, and they universally shrink.

Aspirating them or clocking them with the family Bible will give temporary relief and universal recurrence. But this is often enough.

Any chance of posting a photo Noviss? It's a good topic for discussion.

Sorry mate can't remember medical names. Inside part of the acl. It was quite big but they assured me structurally it was fine, just a bit of discomfort.

Anyways the point is mine did reside to some extent but it took a long time about 6 months or very gentle riding and much reduced volume, after completely off the bike for 3 months.

Had one on the inside of my knee joint- was aspirated and cortico-steroided, hasn't reappeared after 10 years or so. Mine likely an impact from dislocating kneecaps.
Had to have it aspirated as it impinged on knee mobility

I think I will whack it with something and hold off on the aspiration for now.

Nice photo. Sure looks most likely a thumb MCP ganglion. More common in Tri/TT riders because of using their thumbs to shift.

I was aware of an aneurysm being misdiagnosed as a ganglion here. Made the operation a bit exciting.

I have been doing too frequent tyre changes (punctures, new tyres and wheel swaps) and tend to use my thumbs to put the tyres back on the rims instead of using tyre levers. I always find my thumbs are quite tender for a day or two following the change. And now the tyres aren't as warm due to the weather extra effort is required. Would this be the cause or just an added aggravation?

Might very well be.

Also common in bass guitarists.

I had a ganglion removed at the end of May, about 2cm below the base of my right little finger. Almost 4 months later and the scar is still somewhat sensitive, and my grip strength on my little finger is maybe only 70% of what it was. I have full range of motion and day to day tasks aren't a problem, but using the flying fox at school the other day made it hurt when I released the handle.

I didn't ask and the specialist didn't tell me what the expected recovery time would be, silly me. It does seem to be getting better slowly and steadily so I'm not worried.

I had one on the palm of my hand; one day I went over a big bump and it went away.
Please be nice to me, I'm not very bright.
