Head Bump

Hey all,

Was playing soccer last night, went up for a header and copped either an elbow or another head straight into the edge of my forehead, which swelled up into a huge egg looking thing almost instantly. Came off straight away and iced it. Kept icing it on and off most of the night.

Swelling has probably gone down by about 50-60% this morning.

All I want to know is... when will I be right to ride again?!

There's no pain unless you put a bit of pressure on it. I tried my helmet on and no issues there, but I figure I probably shouldn't go exerting myself too much?

Anyone know how long these things normally take to go away?

Cheers.

Have had this injury (normally a clash of heads) a couple of times. First things first, have you had it looked at? Do not mess around with a cranial impact. My first one gave me a concussion, but I was too much of a hero to have it looked at as a 16yo playing his first ever game with the Senior squad. Fell over later that night and spewed everywhere.

The lump will be noticeable to you as bruising and a lump for anything up to a few weeks. On my second one, when it was determined that my Germanic skull (cranius geometricus) had not suffered a concussion, I used Hirudoid for a really ugly forehead bruise. Turned a really cool tie-dyed purple/blue in 24 hours.

Please go to GP (at least) and/or ER if you are feeling sustained headache, dizziness, nausea, anything remotely indicating memory loss or impaired speech or spotty vision.

And especially go if you thought you were typing your post into WebMD (joke).

Please accept this from a former athlete who ignored all of of his injuries or didn't rehab them properly and is now paying the price.

Wait, this isn't WebMD? :?

Thanks for the reply mate.

Haven't had any of the symptoms you listed, and feel absolutely fine. Remember the incident entirely, and one of the blokes in our team has a bit of first aid training, so put me through a few concussion tests and made sure I was all good before he'd let me go home.

The swelling seems to have gone down a bit more since I originally posted, so I'm just going to take it easy and not do anything too strenuous.

On your second one (without the concussion), did you stay away from exercise or anything for a period after?

From what I remember (it was the 80s) I didn't do post-match, also didn't do the obligatory team gym session on the Monday morning but I may have used it as an excuse.

it sounds like a goose egg hematoma. I've had a few on shins over the years.
