What on earth are we supposed to do to stay alive?
You have lights and everything and ride to be visible, yet that still happens.

I had some pretty bad driver encounters around Douglas Park and Picton on Sunday - there are some really bad drivers around there, even ones going the opposite direction who couldn't help but yell out the window.

This looks like the sort of situation that was being discussed on this forum a week or two ago: Moore Park Road there has a dedicated left turn lane but no bicycle lane, so where is a cyclist meant to ride if they wish to go straight ahead?

Tragic.
Yes I think it was just after the bus stop about here: https://www.google.com.au/maps/(AT)-33.889 ... 312!8i6656

Comments on SMH's facebook page are suggesting that he got doored by the tow truck that was there hooking up a white car (4WD or ute) that had been in an nose to tail accident earlier in the morning.

Cycling fatality update ...there were 2 accidents in Moore Pk Rd this morning - a parked truck (in the pic) was shunted slightly onto roadway. It was while passing this truck the cyclist was clipped by another truck. Sad unfortunate set of circumstances

Police are investigating the death of a cyclist in Leeton in the early hours of Sunday.
The 33-year-old man was riding his bike down Currawang Avenue about 2am, when he was struck by a vehicle, police believe.
The uncertainty over if the rider was hit by a vehicle indicates that if a vehicle was involved it was a hit and run.
Followup with a murder charge...

That makes me wonder whether this was a targeted incident. Even the most flagrant hit run drivers don't usually get charged with murder.

Yes that's got to be first, they must have some extraordinary information that we don't know about.

Up in Noosaville last year a motorist chased cyclists up onto the footpath trying to run them over (with the passenger yelling I'm going to kill you, you idiot), before eventually finding another cyclist and swerving directly into the cycle lane to kill him. Not murder. Not even man slaughter up there in Qld. Merely "the worst case of dangerous driving" that the judge had ever seen apparently. So if they are pursuing murder charges here it must be something quite extraordinary.

Following on the news from brumby33 - this is tragic news and the SMH has some details. The collision was was on Moore Park Road near Lang road at 7.20am. Emergency services were already there as they were attending to a car crash and the news states that the second crash occurred just metres away.

Their photo shows a road bike.

Just heard on the news. This is so sad and wasteful
I wish there were more details so lessons can be learnt from such a tragic situation.

I reported this at 10.14am and there's some useful information by other posters on what likely happened earlier in this thread.

From https://www.police.sa.gov.au/sa-police- ... st-georges: "A cyclist has died following a crash at St Georges last week. About 8.30am, Thursday 29 March emergency services were called to Portrush Road and Purnana Avenue after reports of a collision between a cyclist and truck. The cyclist a 69-year-old man from Henley Beach was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with life threatening injuries but sadly died last night."

It was an articulated truck, which apparently hit the cyclist while turning left off Portrush Road. That's now 4 cyclist road deaths in SA this year :( :(

As I saw pointed out elsewhere, all 4 (in fact 5 because there was one off road not included in the road toll) were in one month :(

Not good. Portrush Rd is not a good road to ride (especially up the hill) due to the volume and type of traffic.

Google maps don't actually show Purnana intersecting Portrush? But I assume that it was somewhere around here: https://www.google.com.au/maps/(AT)-34.951 ... 312!8i6656

So another left hook by a truck apparently. Is this yet another case of a truck driver thinking that the overtake is "a done deal" the moment that the cab goes in front of the cyclist?

If you look at the TV news footage, it was the corner of Woodcroft Ave. and Portrush Road.

I read that witnesses said that the cyclist tried to "undertake" while the truck's indicator was on. Who knows what the truth is.

If the cyclist was next to the truck when it indicated to turn left then the truck driver is obliged to give way to the cyclist. As you say "who knows the truth". It's all moot when someone is killed anyway - they're not coming back.

Yes that was exactly my point. Some people seem to think that as soon as the cab is past the cyclist then the pass is complete. The pass isn't complete until ALL of the vehicle is a safe distance past the cyclist. This is why so many left hooks happen.

I found a TV news report. A witness said that traffic was stationary for a couple of minutes, that its indicator was on, and the rider rode up on the left just as the truck was doing its left turn.

Who was technically at fault would probably depend on how far back the cyclist was when the truck began moving (though a defensive driver should check their left mirror, and I'm happy to say my kids were taught that when they learned to drive in the last few years). But regardless of who was right or wrong, I find it a sobering lesson to be certain traffic is stationary before attempting an undertake.

....which state you're in.

In WA you cannot legally pass to the left of a vehicle indicating a left turn.

Ok thanks for the info AP. I was thinking that near stationary traffic might have been one possible scenarios where a 69yo cyclist could be genuinely undertaking a truck.

Yes it's definitely a situation to try to avoid if you can. Any time the traffic is slower than the cyclist and you are routinely undertaking then you are in danger. Regardless of the legality (or not) of it, I personally have has so many near misses under these circumstances that I now take to the footpath (regardless of the legality of that as well) whenever I find myself in that particular situation.
