Dirty cycleway NSW

Postby Jmuzz » Tue Jul 03, 2018 2:29 pm

Is there any standard on how dirty a path NSW can be before it must be cleaned?

I reported this one to council with Snap Send Solve app requesting street sweeping, but they said it's RMS (roads authority) not their problem (yeah thanks for not even forwarding it to them).

Reported to RMS website but ignored and never responded or did anything.

Any standard or guidelines I can quote in a new request?

Looks pretty clean to me. I've seen far worse.

RMS is a member organisation of Austroads and Austroads' Cycling Aspects of Austroads' Guides Publication makes the following recommendation in Appendix F:
Regular maintenance activities on paths should include:
• sweeping of paths to remove debris such as broken glass and fine gravel (including that arising from construction and maintenance activities such as crack sealing)
Like all Australian cycling standards it is non-binding but a failure to follow a recommendation in an industry standard may lead to claims of negligence in the event of an accident.

You can at least enquire what the cleaning schedule is for the path and suggest that it is inadequate to maintain the path in good condition. That way if you do have an accident on the path you can show that they were aware of the problem and chose to ignore it.

Cycleways within the city of Sydney are swept daily with a special sweeper

Outside the bounds of the CBD, you are lucky if they are swept yearly

You get money for building bike paths, I would have thought you would be up for a contract to clean them as well - a bloke who can operate a bob-cat could drive the sweeper :D

The gravel against the wall in from construction, it never got a broom over it since the bridge was widened and road was resealed.

So it would just be nice if they finished the job so that it was like all the other clean sections of path.

Just to spite me after posting this thread some gardners were deploying mulch 20m down the path this morning.
They made a big mess and blowered/swept it clean.
Just not this gravelly section because that is on the bridge without garden.

Warning for triggering how the world "should" be, 2nd listening to audiobook of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (Michael Kramer spoken version), there's a good rant on ideas the gravel illustrates.

On that note, the sheep don't have any ethical shepherds in sight in their daily grazing, it just looks like all wolves above, so no surprise really.

Is there a safety issue to be reported?
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

The M4 path between SOP and Parramatta is atrocious!

Well it's always less safe with gravel isn't it.
Each piece reduces traction.
Mostly it just discourages cycling when it starts becoming a gravel path so it's nicest if they will give it a cleanup.

Not to be unhelpful, but it reminds me of the Monty Python's the 4 Yorkshiremen

If it can be presented as a safety issue your more likely to get action

No way in hell I’d use one of those things, esp. in the cbd. Just look at the cyclist behind that thing. Reckon the operator can see him?

TBH, I’m not sure who cleans the separated paths in Melbourne. The company that cleans the roads doesn’t have them to my knowledge and the company that does cleans the footpaths. Must suss that out!

I sent another RMS request and they have cleaned the section.
