If you're interested in measuring just how close that moron was, here is a DIY distance sensor based on a rasberry PI, for output to your camera



I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it would be an interesting addition to the visual method that trailgumby sets out in his series on getting police to act on video evidence

Yeah, I saw this the other day. Doesn't look too difficult to put together.

There is a small business opportunity here if someone were to produce these things and ruggedize them, get them running efficiently on rechargeable batteries, provide some mounting options and most importantly thoroughly test and certify them such that they could be used as sufficient evidence of a close pass. If you could just hand your logged data to your local constable so they could just issue fines based on legit data then that might take some fiction out of the existing procedures.

Consumer grade laser distance measurers are extremely accurate for this purpose. mm accurate to whatever it is pointing at. These are used all the time in construction.

They used two laps, one red, one green. The relative position told you the distance
