TCR Disc coming for MY17

Postby biker jk » Fri Feb 12, 2016 4:38 pm

It appears that a TCR Advanced SL Disc and Advanced Pro Disc are coming for MY17. So Giant will offer disc brakes and race geometry.

Yeah had to happen with the uci approval. I wouldn't be surprised if we still see a SL with rim brakes as well as disc. Will be very interesting to see which will be the SL0 DA di2 model or if we see shimano wireless or something like that. Going to be an interesting year.

The disc version was rumoured as far back as 18 months ago when the Defy series was updated, featuring discs & the TCR was held over for an additional year, but was confirmed to be updated for the '16 model (current frame). So if anything the initial-release, current series rim-braked frame was the surprise package.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Might be fine for some who are willing not to carry any parts forward (from previous bikes) and whack down a 15k sum.

i just can't see the value just to have discs.

but hey that just me.

Bikes are going up as the dollar de-values, it is pretty typical for the top latest bike of each brand to be around 15k with ALL the fruit, even rates mates not much change out of 10k, remember, can't whip the carbon porn wheels off your old bike, thats another new purchase too.

The original Di2-spec bikes were around $12k. The current top-spec Giant, even with our deflated dollar is closer to $8k. Discs + Di2 are already around, so there's no reason why the new model would be anywhere near $15k unless something really goes pear-shaped with the exchange rate.

Yeah less than 6k will get you a brand new giant with di2 and nice wheels. Discs isn't going to change that much....

okay maybe Giants are good value, but 6k is without bling wheels. If you want your wheels to match your bike, 2-3k extra. So by the time you buy a few accessories, 10k.

I personally will not spend more than 5k, last years model or secondhand. I got the most fantastic bike for 5k. Bottecchia emme2 2013 (from a shop) like new not a mark on it, handmade in italy with chorus grouppo and record compact with reynolds MVT 32 wheels all fitted ready to go! Under 5k.

bikes just de-value so much, unless your a professional or got heaps of money, is it worth it, will you go faster?

If you want a pricing reference, all you need to do is look at the equivalent Defy models, with the top-spec Defy Advanced SL 0 (Dura-Ace Di2/RS785 hydro disc brakes) at $7.5k. Over the last few years the parallel Defy & TCRs have been very similar in spec and price, so that will give a fairly decent indication of what to expect for the disc TCRs when they land.

Great news.
Light and now just as good braking as a defy SL!

I was considering getting a defy disc but now may have to consider this. Any idea what the equivalent weight difference between defy and TCR disc versions would be?

Not a lot. I'm not sure about the Advanced/Pro, but at SL level the Defy is actually a lighter frame than the TCR thanks to its finer tube profiles.

then you add on about 300g at each end for the additional weight of the rotor/brake assembly

I believe the additional weight is closer to 400g-450g. Indeed, Hopetech built up an S-Works Tarmac disc alongside the caliper brake version and the extra weight was 440g.

That's irrelevant. The question was, with my emphasis:
Bluejay87 wrote:Any idea what the equivalent weight difference between defy and TCR disc versions would be?
. Over the last few years prior to the Defy diverging with discs, the spec sheets of the two have been virtually identical aside from the frame. Therefore, when the TCR gains discs, the specs come back together, so we return to the only difference being the frame. And the Defy has the edge, at least at the Advanced SL level. The Advanced frames (which are the same for the Pro models, only the forks differ) I would hazard a guess would be very similar.

Thanks Duck. You interpreted the question as intended.

Sounds like I'd be better off getting a deal on a 15/16 defy disc than waiting for a 17 TCR disc and paying the associated premium.

Have never ridden either frame before though so will need to test first to make sure I don't prefer the TCR.

I hope you're not responding to my response to Jason which was a correction to how much disc brakes add to the weight of a bike and made no reference to the relative weight of a TCR disc versus Defy disc.

In any case, the TCR Advanced SL frame (medium size) weighs 856g and fork 302g, versus 890g and 370g, respectively, for the Defy Advanced SL.

Which was still irrelevant, given the question was specifically regarding the difference, between the two disc models. In any case, the TCR Disc frame isn't released into the wild yet, so none of us know exactly what it weighs yet.
