SRAM recall ALL hydraulic disc brakes STOP USING

Postby rheicel » Thu Jan 23, 2014 1:29 pm

PBK gave me the refund for my S700. Then I just picked up a used mechanical DA7900 as an interim.
I'll jump again to rim hydraulic as the tides settles.

Finally got the replacements for my hydraulic brakes. Too slow SRAM. And have to waste another 3 hours travelling to and from my LBS (well not really L is it? ;-) ) in June/July to get the replacement hydraulic brakes.

New Info from SRAM - a type of FAQ with sine if these questions:

Can I ride my hydraulic brakes in warm weather?
When will MY15 brakes be available?
Can I keep my key interim mechanical brakes?
Who do I contact for obtaining new brakes?
What are the next steps?

I think I'll stick with my floating-caliper cable discs.

They're only 'cheapies' but work very well ALL the time, and are dead-reliable.

Never could see a valid reason for hydraulic discs on a bicycle, apart from technical oneupmanship.
I don't care if it's a $20 Huffy or a $20k Colnago, as long as you're riding, and you're happy.

I agree. But most of the industry is drive by that and the profession level bikes. It would like having the motoring retail market being lead by F1 technology. Reliability and durability is askewed for the sake of unneeded 'performance'. You just need to look at what sort of equipment and bikes that the Dutch use to see on their bikes.

That said, properly configured hydraulic discs are a dream to use.

Put a deposit last Tuesday. LBS told me delivery for the bike will be within 3-4 weeks due to this issue.

SRAM president Stan Day reports on the actual cause of the failure. In the second part it does go on to 'sell' the new model.

Another video update from Sram president Stan Day.

In short - only real info is confirmation of production of the 2015 models in late April (hydraulic disc and rim) and affected customers will be the first to receive the replacement. So you don't need to watch the video :)

Has anyone actually got the replacement hydraulic brakes yet?
I received RMA notification from SRAM on 1 May, contacted bike shop 13 May who contacted SRAM Aust same day, followed up with bike shop 30 May, bike shop who contacted SRAM Aust again on 3 June as they had not heard anything.

Still waiting .....

I'm not affected. But I would be in no hurry for replacements. All those replacement systems to manufacture on top of regular production. Something's going to suffer, can you say QA....

Apparently the replacements are making their way into the country. Bought a new Giant TCX this week and will be about a week til their next shipment of parts to upgrade it from cable to hydraulics. I

Seems that is only coming in dribs and drabs.

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully only a week for me then. Cheers.

Should have said also - they've done a couple of swap overs already in past couple of weeks.

Picked bike up Friday and it all looked good. While the interim cable BB7 were good, the feel of the new hydraulic was very smooth and responsive - at least on the shop floor. The hoods are still as tall as before but I expect I will get used to that (again).

Went for two hour ride though Galston Gorge/Berowra Water this morning and the brakes performed perfectly and were quiet. The original hydraulic brakes always had the odd rattle in the front brake and the interim cable brakes always had slight sound (maybe needed to be re-centered) while riding but the replacement hydraulic brakes are silent except during braking when they make minimal noise. The interim shifter for the front derailleur was never perfect (something to do with road shifter vs mountain derailleur on the Revolt) but with the new setup the front derailleur is smooth and reliable as it was with the original hydraulic setup.

So very happy with replacement brake/shifters (apart from the fact they did not make me go any faster )

Came home today to find parcel at my front door - strange I had not ordered anything (well not that I could remember). It is a gift from SRAM. A watch as a followup thank you for sticking with SRAM hydraulic. Not a great watch by any means but a nice gesture.

Keep the receipt for when SRAM recalls the watch.

Just a followup - my front brake has been getting noisy the last couple of weeks and suspected it was time for a brake pad change. Took it in for service and both front and back pads needed to be replaced. Examined the pads and they were both getting down to the thickness of spring. Nice even wear front and back after 3600km of riding. Given bike + rider > 100kg and lots of descents (after the ascents) in all weathers thats probably ok milage (these are my first experience with disk brakes)

Oh and the brakes are nice and quiet again.
