I guess we'll have to drag it out of you. :)

What size? Any other must haves?

As it happens there is a bargain-priced Surly LHT in the Marketplace on this site. It's a biggish frame so would fit a taller rider.

Oh sorry, I'm 5'11, around 84kg. Not sure about must haves. Just a dedicated touring bike as I plan on doing some pretty long trips next month (Adelaide-Melbourne; Around Tassie). Can you direct me to the Surly forum?

OK, look here. Price was dropped again only few days ago and I think it's a bargain. SYD Custom Surly Long Haul Trucker 60cm.

The frame geometry of the Long Haul Tracker can be a bit misleading, but this might be a bit big for you. I suggest you contact the seller and find out how it fits him.

I have a fully kitted Surly, low mileage still languishing in the shed. I'm in Melbourne, about your height and it's a 56cm. Details here....viewtopic.php?f=25&t=91718

Interesting and yes absolute entrance level bike...but interesting none the less - this gearing set up affords something like a 24 - 96 gear inch range, from the one front chainring! 24 is not that low but for this price you could probably afford to get a smaller front crankset/ring! Frame geometry looks OK...kinda weird front rack setup but this thing would get you (and your gear) from A to B just fine methinks. Particularly if A - B didn't involve crossing a mountain pass or being in a wilderness area!

Thought it worth sharing.

Looks like a clone of Trek's 920. About half the price too!

As a Surly Long Haul Trucker owner around your height I would say the 60cm is going to be too big, the 56cm frame would be much more suitable.

If I could accommodate more than my Ogre, I've love a Dawes Ultra Galaxy.
I've a friend with a Galaxy and he raves about it so much its hard not to share the enthusiasm for such a quintessential British touring cycle.

Bargains aplenty at the moment. The Dawes went for $157 and the asking price for the Ogre is a steal given it's a popular frame loaded with top shelf components.

The guy that bought the Dawes Galaxy put it on gumtree a couple of weeks later, minus quite a few parts, for 300$ - had a look in person and thought it was a really bad deal - offered me it for 200, still a bad deal.

guess it depends how you interpret touring but at $1290 it seems like a reasonably priced big dummy cargo bike is up for grabs in WA

And something else in birkdale QLD for $750 could warrant a further investigation as something ready to roll in the (light) touring dept

This ticks a lot of boxes.

Although the description of Deore 1x groupset is clearly wrong.

My 2013 VWR touring bike is still on market on ebay

Third time listed, reduced price

Large frame for those of around 5'8 to 6'3

If it doesn't sell this time, i may eventually turn it into a bikepacker or relist in mid spring.

Cheers

On eBay I spotted:

Surly Ogre Touring Commuter Bicycle
“Used for one tour, great condition aside from a few surface scratches compliments of the airlines.”

The spiel:
"Surly Ogre Touring/Commuter bike size Medium. It has Shimano XT crankset and brakes, SRAM XO rear derailleur and X9 shifters, Stans NoTubes Flow EX wheels - rear built on a Hope Pro 2 Hub and front on a SP Dynamo Hub, 135mm and 9mm spacing. It comes with Tubus front and rear racks, mud guards, Maxxis Crossmark Tyres, Easton stem, foam grips.

Everything is in good condition, freehub bearings are a bit notchy. There are just a few marks on the frame compliments of the airlines (see photos).
I can ship it at buyers expense"
