A Salsa Fargo for me...

Postby RonK » Tue May 19, 2015 10:56 pm

Way back at the start of the year I took the plunge and pressed the button on a Salsa Fargo 2 frame from HiBike in Germany, one of the few places where you can buy Salsa online. After a wait of some months, it arrived mid-April.

Image

It's going to take a while as funds slowly trickle in, but the process of acquiring components for the build is under way, with the delivery this week of a pair of Stan's Notube ZTR Flow EX rims, a Hope Pro 2 Evo rear hub, a Shutter Precision PD-8X dynamo hub - all in 36 hole, and a Salsa Flip-Off skewer for the back wheel. These will shortly be going off to my wheel builder Steven Craft for assembly.

Meanwhile I'm thinking about having a radical clear out of all my current touring bikes and gear - to make room and to free up funds.

At least with a straight seattube it'll be easier for you to sew up a frame bag.

Do you have any pannier racks you wish to offload?

Tell us a little about the forks RonK.
I like the new method ensuring wheel alignment as I've found the Ogre has ovals in the dropouts that seem too large, making misalignment of the wheel very easy, making for problematic disk alignment which, for me, is where it shows up.
I had a bike shop give up trying to align my caliber after I'd given up myself.
I sorted the issue by aligning the wheel somewhat by hand before going back to the caliber which sorted it.

Are those forks drilled for pannier racks?
I can see the Anything Cage mounts but nothing else.
I ask as earlier Fargo forks are something I've seen on Ogres in an attempt to lighten the bike as well a method of utilising the mountings to carry both a front rack as well as cages.

Yes, only if you want a front rack. I have a used Tubus Ergo.

The Salsa forks and the rear dropout design eliminate disc alignment problems.
The forks are carbon fibre Salsa Firestarter. They don't have pannier bosses, only Anywhere cage bosses as you have observed. Salsa also offer a steel version but as far as I can tell it has no pannier bosses either.
Also it is suspension corrected (long).

It's taken hours of trolling through websites to decide on components for the build. I've been keeping an eye out for good prices on X5, X7 and X9 components, only to realise that stocks are rapidly disappearing. Why? Well, I finally discovered that SRAM have released new 1x10 and 2x10 GX groupsets which supersede X7 and X9. Nobody has stock yet but I'm going to order as the prices are surprisingly affordable.

As posted, the wheel components have arrived - the rest, well it'll be ordered as funds become available.

OK, so here's the proposed component list:

This looks like a build I did haha!

Looks like a serious build! Some comments (feel free to ignore :D ):

- Does the fork not come with maxle? These usually come with suspension forks, not sure about rigid. They are not cheap things! < this is more of a rant than anything.
- You'll need inline adjusters as the sti shifters with mtb RD will not have an adjuster. Not sure about the spyres. The adjusters might come with the jagwire kit though.
- 36/22 that's serious gearing!
- On parts I can't recommend bike-discount (Germany) enough. Really good deals (especially schwalbe) with a flat 20 euro postage - makes bulk orders really cheap! Uber fast postage too - gotta love german efficiency.

Can't wait for the build pics!

Yes, the Maxle came with the fork. You're right about the price - €35 to buy separately
Good advice - which I had forgotten about - I have inline adjusters on my other bikes, it's very handy to be able to fine-tune as you ride. Think I have some in my parts bin but if not I'll get some more. The Spyres will be fine, they have adjusters.
36/22 is not that low with 29er wheels - 17.4 gear inches. Almost identical to my current gearing which is 34/22 with 700x32C tyres - 17.5 gear inches. I need 'em all.
Meanwhile 11/36 will give me a 40kph top gear - a lot faster than I'll be pedalling a bikepacking bike.
The Germany shops are very competitive with both prices and shipping charges. €20 shipping seems to be about the standard. I've been looking at Bike24, HiBike, Starbike and bike-discount.de. The price of the frame from Hibike vs Bike24 was the difference between paying GST or not.

Pretty similar component list as the ECR I just built. I haven't fitted inline gear cable adjusters yet but I 'spose I'll have to.

Are you planning to fit mudguards?

Nope - not planning to fit mudguards or racks. My thinking is that It will be bikepacking bags and that's all.

Why the shutter precision hub instead of a SON? I can only assume you wanted a thru axle front hub, but why? I really don't see the point on a touring bike. Particularly when your giving up the option of the best dynamo hub on the market.

I find it funny that in the last 18 months everyone seems incapable of getting their disc hub to sit square in the front drop outs. As such they think they need a through axle for alignment. Yet we seemed to have no issue in the previous 15 years :?

The frameset is supplied with a through axle fork (which suits me fine), it's not an option.
I have no problem foregoing the SON. I already have one of each and I'm very impressed with the SP.
At 132 euros vs 280 euros it was a very easy decision to choose SP.
Just like certain other german products, I think SON is overhyped, overated and overpriced. SP are making inroads into SON sales.

Sounds good but for me not quite enough green yet.
You do know that you can still get green salsa stem caps and green salsa water bottles...
( saddle n bottle holders green but not salsas)

Hehe - I even considered Chris King's apple green headset and hubs.

Shutter Precision PD-8X dynamo hub. Lightweight, compact and innovative design.

Slide the dummy axle in and fit a skewer to use with standard dropouts.
Slide the dummy axle out and use with a 15mm through axle.
For less than half the price of the SON 28 15.

While I think the SP Dynamo looks cheap compared to the SON I have to agree options and value seem pretty good...

Interesting that you went with 36 hole wheels when most 29" bikepacking set-ups I've seen go 32 hole as they're not carrying quite the weight of fully loaded touring?

Nice looking frame...look forward to the final build.

Be interested to see an SP 9 series with disc mounts. But based on their historical length of time between updates and releases that's likely to be 2 or more years away.

At golf ball size the 9 series is impressively small - but could it feasible to make it with a 15mm through axle? Not so sure...
