I will be running my current setup of Zee rear mech with an 11-36 cassette and going down to a 34 N/W chainring from my current 36. I went to this setup from running 34-18 SS so the extra gears are great. I have been running 1x10 on this for the past 6000kms and never dropped a chain. For cranks I will probably rob my Reign of it's Race Face Evolve XC ones for now until I save up for something better.
That's superhuman hearing for touring! You must be as strong as an ox.

I recently test-rode a 1x10 (30t chainring, 11-36 cassette) Krampus around the streets of my suburb (in Wellington - so, rather hilly) and could barley make it up some of the hills completely unladen. Those 3" Knards take a bit of oomph to get going, too.

Off road, and with even a banana in my back pocket I'd be struggling. But that's just me ...

You must have experienced a decent southerly gale by now Espresso.
Welly's not called the windy city for nothing.
Have you been up to the top of MT Victoria on a still night (one preferably with a moon) as the view is unrivalled.
The water appears as black glass on a still night.
Get yourself a book of Welly monuments as they can make for some great pics, especially night photos.
There are some hidden gems, e.g. a huge white marble edifice south of Oriental bay half way up the hill up a track that few even know exist.
Best found in daylight to get the location and then a visit on a moon lit night where the white marble glows. If thats too much effort, even the statues and water features around the waterfront close to the museum and Michael Fowler Centre make for some great photo opportunities.
Theres trout that can be caught in the Hutt river if your tenacious. What suburb are you staying in and have you got decent heating for winter as Welly can be bitterly cold at times in Winter. I spent some years there and miss it heaps (the city and not the cold)

Yep. October wasn't pleasant.

Thanks for the tips - will keep that in mind. I'm not doing much other than short rides and work these days, since I had my second child about a week ago!

It seems a lovely place so far - we're in Hataitai (on a flat bit!) so not far from Mt Vic and the city, but far enough away to feel like I'm not living in the CBD. We have central heating - the only way to go!

Frame is still about 10 weeks away :-(

In the mean time I will be ordering the rear wheel.

Well after saying I didn't want a Rohloff, I think I may be changing my mind.

They just look so good with one fitted.

While I decide on a Rohloff I picked this up today

XT 11sp 11-42

It will go with the Zee crank I bought last week and 34t N/W chainring.

What are the other options?

I'm trying to see if I can fit 26x3 Knards on my existing bike, and it looks like clearance will be ok on the frame, but like you I'd struggle to get the FD and triple crankset to work. I need at least 2x (being the smaller two chainrings) and I can't find anything other than a Surly OD ($$$) to make that work.

Really?

What will you do with this frame when the ECR comes?

Why is the ECR taking so long anyway? I thought you got it locally?

You can never have too many bikes :D

Krampus frame was 2nd hand from a mate who bought a Niner Ros9 plus. I had all the parts to build it and still have enough parts to build the ECR. I broke my Superfly frame so used the wheels and seatpost/saddle from that and pulled down my Reign for the bars, stem, drivetrain and brakes.

Krampus was also bought to fit a Wee-Ride child seat too as it didn't really fit too well on my Fatbike.

Image

ECR is taking so long because the importer does not stock large frames and only does an order once a month that takes 8-10wks to get here.

And now I am also waiting for a new Superfly frame which I will build into a Single Speed.

My frame turned up 2 weeks ago and I have all the parts to build it.

I just don't have anywhere too build it until my shed gets built.

I was always told the lounge with the big screen is the backup shed.

It's emerged from storage. Just waiting on a headset and some brake lines and the build will commence.

Finally.....

I found out the 30t front ring won't work so will try my 34t over the weekend.

Great stuff! Looks excellent.

What hearing did you go with in the end? Doesn't look like an 11-36 cassette. Any why wouldn't the 30t chain ring fit?

Looking great MC at least you have had time to mull over the build but it's awesome that's it's now rideable and the shed looks good too.

Thanks guys. It's had a few teething problems but otherwise going well. Have done just over 600kms on it including a 150km overnighter where it shone.

I went with XT 11sp gearing with 11-42 and a 34 upfront. THe 30t didn't fit as the chain hit the tyre in the top 2 gears.

It handles much better after I dropped the handlebars down by about 2 inches.

I ended up taking the Brooks B17 off and fitting an on-one seat that was my old favourite.

Gave it a 101km shakedown in the rain and it was good. Now both the Krampus and the ECR have the same handlebar to seat distance as I put the brooks on that.

I was planning on attempting a 200km ride with 3300 metres of climbing. It started off well but 122kms and 2500 metres of climbing into the ride my back tyre decided to pack it in. Lucky the train station was close.

Image

Image

This is my tyre, it split between the carcass and the bead and is still holding air but my frame feels like it's broken.

Image

I was lucky my mate sorted me out with some replacements so I can attempt the 200 on Boxing day.
