Rohloff setup, crankset spinning when bike is pushed.
Postby polishbiker » Thu Mar 30, 2017 8:22 pm
I had my thorn for 4 years now and used it quite a bit but i cannot remember if the crank used to spin when the bike is just being pushed or not.
I noticed it today, is it normal?
I am due to replace the chain and the bearings (phil wood) were replaced about 2000kms ago by a bike shop.
a) nothing to worry about
b) loose/worn chain
c) loose BB bearings?
d)?
Any input is welcome.
Thank you.

Shows how much internal drag they have.

Huge PITA.
Its one of my biggest dislikes about the Rohloff as many is the bruised shin/ankle/calf I've received from simply trying to push my bike uphill.
Still, other than a couple of oil changes...........

Mines a CC version (quick release) if its a notable correlation.
I've a vague recollection of reading tightness at the dropouts being a possible factor.
As my Ogre utilises horizontal dropouts, I have to use a really tight QR torque or suffer movement (side twisting) within the dropouts.
I also utilise a couple of tug nuts to minimalise this but still have to really be assertive with the QR.
I figure this might be a part of the problem but its a little late in the day to start wishing I'd bought a solid axle version.
I believe Surly are now recommending the solid axle version for the Ogre, if a forum post I read is accurate.

Has your recent work at Quantum Cycles made any difference to your cranks spinning when pushing the bike Pawelpolishbiker wrote:Hi there people with rohloff equipped bikes : )

When bike is stationary and you spin the crank backwards by hand it doesnt rotate freely, just stops straight away ha ha....to give you an idea of the drag.
unfortunately there is still a leak ;/
back to the shop on monday.

Until you come to a hill your can't ride up and whist pushing, you lose concentration on the spinning cranks and one cops your shin or calf.Wingnut wrote:1st world problems...rider the sucker and you won't even notice it...
Its my pet hate about my Rohloff but in no way a deal breaker.

polishbiker:
keeps spinning when you just push the bike, with this new seal the drag is more noticable, meant to break in within 2000km, did an 80km ride today to see whether i can ride like this, felt ok.
When bike is stationary and you spin the crank backwards by hand it doesnt rotate freely, just stops straight away ha ha....to give you an idea of the drag.
In my experience there is a direct relationship between the degree of torque on the Rohloff to rear dropout mount (quick release etc) and the amount of crank rotation/seal drag apparent. Might have to mount a hook/loop strap to the left chainstay to secure the crank arm when I'm pushing through all that sand!!rifraf:

The joys of Surly's horizontal dropouts means I have to apply plenty of torque compared to a vertical dropout bike.Rodgerbiltit wrote:In my experience there is a direct relationship between the degree of torque on the Rohloff to rear dropout mount (quick release etc) and the amount of crank rotation/seal drag apparent. Failure to do this sees movement and twisting in the dropouts.
I'd rather put up with the spinning cranks although I suspect there may be some detriment to doing this over time.
I utilise two Surly Tug-nutz to minimise said twisting despite Surly suggesting only one is necessary recommending the drive side if memory serves.
Two seems to have helped but I'm still very cautious about where I stand on the pedals, especially in situations utilising high torque.
