Azzurri Mezzo 90 rear derailleur hanger
Postby cancerward » Wed Jul 03, 2013 3:54 pm
On 15 June, I brought the bike into my LBS for a replacement for the bent rear derailleur hanger. On 19 June, the shop advised me they'd called Cycling Express and were told that this part was out of stock / on order and CE didn't know when they'd be getting any more in from Taiwan.
After a few days of refreshing http://www.cyclingexpress.com/cycle/azz ... arbon.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I didn't believe the shop as only the "Mezzo" hanger had been advertised, and there are at least four main kinds of Mezzo (Mezzo Elite, Mezzo Team, Mezzo Pro, and Mezzo 90). So I bought the "Mezzo" hanger and today I found the LBS was right. The "Mezzo" hanger currently advertised on that page is unsuitable for the "Mezzo 90" frame. This could be made clearer on the CE website - it would save time for their customers and save CE returns as well. Another reason this needs clarification is that CE only currently sells four "Mezzo" bikes - three kinds of "Mezzo 90" (Dura-Ace Di2, Ultegra Di2, SRAM Red) and a "Mezzo Team Pro" (Ultegra). It would seem reasonable that their advertised "Mezzo" hanger would fit three out of the four "Mezzo" bikes they currently sell.
The shop also advised that CE said when a hanger is not in stock, it is not shown on that page. If true, this would seem to add to the confusion as some people will just buy the wrong part, assuming that the page shows everything available.
I've been waiting three weeks now and there's no ETA for the part. This is less than I expected from a major bike brand. I thought this would be a fairly easily replaceable part on a current model bike and they've been selling the Mezzo 90 for more than nine months now.
The shop is following up with CE for me. I hope I can post some good news here soon.

I told them that was unacceptable, and that their Azzurri rear derailleur hanger page does not explain that their "Mezzo" hanger does not fit the "Mezzo 90". I left my name and phone number - let's see what they can do. At the moment, naturally, I would not recommend this bike to others.
My friend got an email saying "Under new management, New Website coming 1st Aug". They definitely need a big shake up.

He said they had not had it in stock before and no-one had ordered it before. I told him I was pretty pissed, I had been waiting three weeks, and he needs to fix the website straight away so that customers know the "Mezzo" hanger there won't fit three out of four "Mezzo" bikes they currently sell. I said how will I know you have it in stock; he said he'd update the website so it would say "Mezzo 90" hanger. (That hanger is for the "white Mezzo".) He'd been waiting six months. He promised to call me back as soon as they were in stock and I said I'd be following it up anyway.

Some spares for many bikes/bike parts are non-existant. Eg Shimano does not sell any spares for its brakes - its anew caliper or nothing.

It was bent after the bike fell on the derailleur side, but that's not really relevant. I did ask them to sell me one off a new bike after telling them August was an unacceptable timeframe. I'll take a look at that page of spares too (but I think the LBS had looked). I agree with the standard hanger suggestion.
Well, I hope CE learns from this experience - there was a guy from Malaysia asking for the Mezzo 90 hanger on their facebook page today: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... 838&type=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Right now when I search for the keyword "hanger" on the CE site ...
https://www.cyclingexpress.com/?lang=en ... ord=hanger" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
... I get only two results: "Azzurri Rear Hanger for Mezzo 90" and "Park Tool Derailleur Hanger Alignment Gauge - DAG-2". The picture of the Mezzo 90 hanger on that page is silver and has two holes (https://www.cyclingexpress.com/?lang=en ... r-Mezzo-90" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). The actual Mezzo 90 hanger is black (like the page says) and has four holes in total. Even the Mezzo hanger that I ordered has three holes, so I don't know what the picture on that page is.
At the moment it seems the only hanger you can find on the website is for the Mezzo 90 - so they've gone from being that one being the only one you can't find to that one being the only one you can find. There is clearly still some website work to do.
OK, that is enough criticism. I am really enjoying riding it again.
Durian Rider has promised a review in his Mezzo 90 unboxing video (7 August): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cJlfGjql4k" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
He really liked the Forza RL and said there's now no difference between a $2,500 bike (i.e. the Forza) and a $10,000 bike: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4kIB234vOY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... the unboxing video was on 25 April 2013 and the review video was on 21 May 2013, so there could be a review of the Mezzo 90 soon.

I am still happy with my bike after 2 years and 12,700 km. At the beginning I replaced the 120 mm stem with a 90 mm stem. I replaced the tyres (Continental Ultra Race) and chain and cassette around 8,200 km, the bar tape and bar ends a couple of times, and that's it. The tyres are now GP Attack and Force - much better rolling resistance - the first Force (back) lasted about 3,000 km and then I noticed a chunk missing, and I am replacing the Attack (front) after 4,500 km as it's looking a bit furry on one side.
The Mezzo 90 is listed on azzurribikes.com but I'm not sure whether cyclingexpress intends to sell them in the future. The specs seem a bit higher than one of the competitors, the Cell Omeo 2.0. Feel free to chime in if you know ...

18 hangers - 2 Azzurri, 1 Cannondale, 2 Carrera, 4 Colnago, 5 De Rosa, 1 Giant, 1 Pinarello, 1 Verite, 1 Wilier.
I've seen Azzurri hangers on sale there for as low as $A5.61. I don't think this or random pricing is a good look.
Competitors...
Cell - [broken link removed] - $A25
Polygon - https://www.bicyclesonline.com.au/polyg ... 3-drop-out - $A19.95
XDS - couldn't find any

I wonder if they're being phased out. Well, it's generally been a good bike for 6 years, 31,000 km, I've gone through a lot of hangers though Still a couple left.
The Giant Defy Advanced Pro 0 2019 ($6,000) looks like a good alternative for a new one, Ultegra Di2, 50/34 plus 11-34 cassette, power meter, tubeless, hydraulic disc brakes, in six sizes.

RIP. Hope any owners out there got derailleur hangers before they disappeared. I guess that is a higher risk for smaller bike brands.
