Online cycling retailer Wiggle announce a 19 per cent increase in sales in 2013 to overtake Chain Reaction Cycles in the market.
Cycling retailer Wiggle have announced a 19% increase in sales for the year ending February 2 to £168m, from £141m in 2013.
Wiggle say that sales in the UK and Europe are doing well, but the strong Pound is holding back sales from the rest of the world.
Founded in 2009, the company was sold to Bridgeport Capital for £180m in 2011 and became a title sponsor of the women’s professional cycling team Wiggle Honda in 2013.
Wiggle chief executive Stefan Barden told Retail Week: “The underlying performance of the business in the year has been strong, with fast growth in Europe and clear evidence of further market share gains in the UK.
“The momentum has continued into the current financial year with major investment projects underway to not only drive profitable growth but also provide the capacity and infrastructure to support and manage it.
“As a major exporter, ongoing currency headwinds – particularly the recent euro weakness – are unhelpful, but we continue to evolve the business model to better cope with these external pressures.”
The company claim the increase has moved them above Chain Reaction as the biggest global retailer of triathlon products, as their rivals’ sales dropped six per cent to £144.9m.
But the year has not been without controversy for Wiggle, with the company having to deny claims that a new jersey in their dhb range plagiarised designs by Anna Glowinski.

Wow, I'm a little surprised.
Personally, I've moved from wiggle to more competitive companies like discountbike (german) and c r c (well the MTB stuff is cheaper and bigger range). Even the locals, pushys and cell, are getting some of my coin. Maybe its driven by the massive influx of new riders. Wiggle was definitely the first online store I trusted and used when I started up cycling again. Interesting to see how this plays out though - I know that c r c in particular look like they are clawing for market share with their generally lower prices and free shipping offers.

I'm not surprised at all. Ordering from Wiggle is painless and predictable, their range is pretty good and their CS is decent for an online shop. With c r c, you never know whether you're going to get your items in 5 days or 5 weeks, which makes their ever-so-slightly lower prices less attractive. Cell is my first port of call, and are generally very good for predictable and fast shipping, price and CS, but seems to have supply issues on some popular items on occasion...

All of these points I agree with. Wiggle gets my points for having great service, and predictable postage times. I think they also have the best website too.lobstermash wrote:I'm not surprised at all. It is rather interesting that Wiggle appear to have much stronger promotional and marketing overseas whereas c r c have been sporadic and inconsistent.
A possible scenario is that c r c have maxed out their local market potential (actual turnover dipped) and because they havn't been growing their overseas markets with promotion to the extent of Wiggle, then they have been overtaken.
The market is booming and for people new to online shopping, it is very easy to opt for the most visible retailers and the ones everyone talks about.

I find myself more and more, moving away from Wiggle. Not because I think they are bad, they're not, in fact they are very good at taking orders, communicating advice and at providing reasonably fast and free postage. Not a lot to dislike really and they were probably my 'go to' place until recently. Now unfortunately, more and more of their goods cannot be made available to overseas markets eg Australia. I realise this is the manufacturers at play and not Wiggle themselves. However, when a specific item or two important parts of an order isn't available due to the restrictions and the other order items are 'nice to have' and of lesser importance, then its hard to put out any order and they lose the lot.
I did put this issue to Wiggle and while they agreed with me, it is out of their hands unfortunately. I accept this but it is frustrating. I use c r c more now and occasionally Ribble. Although good pricing, I found the Merlin customer service poor and I'd be reluctant to use them in the future. I did try Bike24 once and while Bike24 generally has a decent stock of items and reasonable pricing, due to the larger shipping costs and the painfully slow shipping times, I doubt I'll be returning to Bike24 any time soon.

I've started buying less and less from Wiggle as I search out better quality gear for when I ride (only buying Cuore bibs from now on).
I have spent over 1000AUD there in the last 365 days and the Platinum discount is pretty sweet for the odd expensive item that isn't already on sale.

I agree with comments above.ItsDank wrote:I've started buying less and less from Wiggle as I search out better quality gear for when I ride (only buying Cuore bibs from now on).

Wiggle's quality stuff eventually wears out and the same quality is not available any more. I've tried replacements of their stock brands but have been disappointed each time.
