Like computers, it's a commodity market ATM, with several big brands matching lines with each other. A buyer's market where you get what you pay for.
If it's $300 less than what you think is a similar bike, it's missing something, you just can't tell.
If you're umming and ah-ing, get a flatbar.

I prefer a flat bar, but I do seem to be in a minority. Anyway it suits what I do (commute, with a bag in a basket).
The consensus here is spot on: you need to ride a few bikes to see what you like. Other peoples' experiences are a guide and can help to narrow down the choices but then it is all up to you.
