Only solution is don't use them. There is no legal obligation AFAIK to divulge that the merchant processes overseas.

how come other overseas retailers like wiggle, c r c, etc... don't have these charges?

I gather we are talking about foreign currency conversion charges? Going to PayPal or your bank. Wiggle, c r c, PBK etc have chosen to accept Australian dollars as payment. Evans has recently done the same. The shops that don't can present an invoice in AUD but if you look closer, there is fine print saying you'll be charged in pounds (or whatever). I imagine the shops that charge in AUD cop the currency exchange cost at their end.

They add in the currency charges when you show the price in $AU, change your basket between pounds and dollars and you'll notice about a 2% difference (after conversion), if your bank doesn't charge a foreign currency fee you could save a small amount by paying in pounds.

nope don't think it was a conversion charge, as the charge wasn't even wasn't even on a separate line item. the order was place and payed in AUD

Bought a few things from c r c UK and after a few days waiting only to find to be missing 2 boxes. Aparently these boxes don't have a separate tracking number whereas Aust Post have said each box has a unique tracking number... Maybe its for one reason or another, but surely is inconvenient

Update: Forms filled out and replacements are on their way. Can't fault their after sales service.
Replacement goods finally arrived today - 3 weeks after they were sent. Total delivery time over 6 weeks. Good thing it was not urgent

Ordered some Shimano MT34 shoes and some m520 SPDs on Thursday 4th evening. Realized I actually wanted the M530s so rang them first thing (8:30am) Friday morning. They fixed up the order and even waived the additional $4.99 to "upgrade" to the new pedals. I actually didn't get a shipping notice but it showed shipped in my account on Friday and they arrived today. Noice :)

Decent service from PBK this month. Had a 20% off code which I used for a pair of Conti gp4000s II's ($85 delivered),which were dispatched on the 2nd of this month, and in my hands last Tuesday (9th) morning. Only a week from PBK is borderline miraculous.

Merlin orders.

Ordered some TRP Spyre calipers on Thursday 21/8/14 but they only had 1 in stock. Bought that & put my name down for an email notification when more became available. The next day I get a email saying they have more... so I bought a second one. A week later, the first order arrives...pretty good me thinks.

Second order arrived Sat. 13/9/14...over 4 weeks later. :x
I'm thinking they didn't really get more in the next day but who knows... :?

I'm just lucky the bike wont be finished for a few weeks yet so all good I guess...this time.

First order from Merlin Cycles.

I bought a pair of Trp Hy/rd's and a some gloves.
I paid the $20 premium postage fee, thinking it would be here in a week.
Just over 3 weeks to arrive. The premium postage was Royal Mail Signed for.
Live and learn. I was used to the courier service that Wiggle & c r c offer.
Other than that, Merlin were fine

I'm planning to buy accessories online (overseas), and I'm wondering how easy (or hard) it is to claim warranties/returns.

Or is the price difference compared to an LBS too big that it doesn't matter anymore, and just buy another one?

Well I guess I should have read the feedback about Chain Reaction Cycles...

Their website promises delivery of 4-8 working days for Royal Mail (free shipping)
Ordered some pedals & cleats (ex-stock).
Shipped at the beginning of this month with no tracking facility on the package.
Nothing.
Sent an email to follow-up, and was told to wait 15 days, submit some paperwork and we will send some more.

OK, if I would have known it MAY take up to 15 days for delivery - then I would have ordered elsewhere / or paid for an express service.
For gods sake, don't promise one thing and deliver another!

And tracking! Why not offer tracking?!?!
It's not that expensive and gives buyer and seller peace of mind.

Purchased a few things from Merlin and these were 'apparently' shipped on 1/9/14 with no tracking numbers and still haven't arrived. Its probably been the longest wait nearly beating PBR if it doesnt arrive by today.

Read my post from earlier this week. 2 orders, identical items, ordered one day apart. First item arrived within a week, second took 4 weeks...who knows why. :?
