Purple Extreme

Postby hannos » Mon Dec 06, 2010 11:09 am

Hello,

Does anyone know where i can get Purple Extreme in Sydney?
Or elsewhere if it can be posted/couriered?

Is PE still considered one of the best lubes for chains?

Bike Addiction, Manly.
City Bike Depot, Kent St Sydney
And I'm sure Clarence St Cycles would be able to sell you some at RRP + 20%.

Edit: still the best as far as I'm concerned.

Comes off better with Dirtwash citrus degreasers I discovered the other weekend. Kerosene is better with oil-based lubes.

So any Purple around? Was actually going to try the R&R Extreme in its place because I could find any Purple Extreme. Well that was before Jas put me off. Otherwise I'll keep using my cheapo Shimano Dry Lube.
PS - Tried the Muff Off spray can Teflon stuff but not sold on that either.

Interesting. Personally I won't buy it again. I find it only lasts 150kms before the slight squeaking commences. Others rave but I haven't had that experience.

Did you get your chain spotless before you went your first application?

I currently wipe it clean with a rag before applying. Previously I would remove chain and soak in solvent. I personally don't notice any difference in result.

I've since converted to the suspiciously named Squirt lube. Got a few sample size bottles at The Mont 24 a couple of years ago, tried it and decided I like it better. Less mess, and about as durable if applied according to directions.

And it's an Aussie product.

What sort of mileage are you getting Gumby? So hard to find PE at a non horrifying price.

+1 to shaun's comments. want to know what sort of mileage you're getting. I've done over 15000kms on my current bottle or PX (well more actually as all my mates bikes that turn up get it too)

Jasonc - how many kms did you get before needing to re-apply?

I found px to be very clean, ie it seems to not attract so much dirt and grime to the chain, but I just have to re-apply it too frequently. Needing to re-lube more than once a week seems too often for me.

Pretty sure it's South African? But I use it and am quite happy. Haven't used purple extreme though.

An old example, this was my commuters chain at ~350-400 km mark (Can't be more precise as I'm not anal about logging rides)

I use PE over winter on a brand new KMC X9 73 9 Speed Chain, which I degreased first. At the time I thought it was great because I rode through weeks of rainy weather and I still wasn't hearing any squeaking (when every other lube I have tried to date would be squeaking like no tomorrow).

Anyway towards the end of winter the chain kept skipping i adjusted a couple of times never thinking it was a worn chain. Finally pulled out the chain wear tool and it was past the 0.75 mark and almost at the 1.0 mark. New chain fixed the skipping issues.

anyway I thought I might use the rest of the bottle anyway and see how it goes in summer but I don't want to degrease the chain, anyone tried using PE without degreasing first?
