Women's Internal Hub Bike Recommendation

Postby R34 » Mon Dec 06, 2010 9:11 pm

I was wondering if someone could recommend a good internal hub bike for my wife?
She's over derailiers and wants something simpler so she has no exuse not to ride it :-)
We had a look around but everything seems low end compared to what's available for guys.
Look forward to any advice

Cheers

Nothing wrong with Nexus but would have prefered Alfine
The bike we've seen fitted with the Nexus gear seemed to be the cheaper end of the market with heavy frame and lower end components.
Happy to buy a Nexus 8 speed hub on the right bike
No bike shops here in Perth seem to carry much stock so at least we could at least have a look and test ride.
Hence a recommendation from the experts would be very useful

Well I've ridden a few bikes with a nexus hub, I'm not an expert but they do change gears very well and are low maintinence. I haven't heard of any major problems with them.

I was planning on putting on a commuter, if I ever get around to it at the reccomendation of my mechanic

Maybe some more info would be useful, how much money do you want to spend? Also what is the primary purpose of the bike?

Missus wants to come along with me for some increased fitness.
I just bought a Cannondale Quick1 last week so want something similar in quality to that

Breezer Uptown has internal hub bikes. Price depends on 3 speed or 8 speed. I think they have a Nuvinci version as well.

Sydney prices: http://www.cheekytransport.com.au/stuff ... s/breezer/

It quotes $159AU freight so all up with GST and Duty it should be well under $1500.

Those breezers look pretty nice. Another similar one is the Gazelle Chamonix which has a 7sp nexus with dynamo lights, mudguards rack etc. Great quality, made in The Netherlands.

There is a company in Oz that does vintage style 3 speeds, not sure if that is what she is after but they are much cheaper, like $499 for a 3 speed complete.

If your wife is tallish and is happy to ride a bike that isn't women's specific this bike is worth a look.

That Cell bike would be perfect but unfortunately the wife is "vertically challenged"
Do Cell do a low bar version?
Don't think the wife is into the vintage look ( Me excluded I hope :-) )

Another from Bike Exchange.

That Kona is $1650 new price, $800 is a steal if its the right size.

Ah the site I was talking about has vintage style 3 speeds is http://www.papillionaire.com.au/
Very good value for what is a good practical bike with mudguards/rack - although they are sold out until feb 2011, also only 3 speeds - not sure if this is an issue also not sure whether you and your wife are doing more serious riding or just weekend bike paths.

Dahon has some. Ciao, Glide etc. Some not available in Australia though.

e.g.: Sydney shop

New IOS series (e.g. IOS XL) will also be internal hub.

Caveat: this is not a recommendation, just a heads up.

3 speeds would be an issue unfortunately

I've emailed the seller but not optimistic they would be interested in shipping to Perth from Melbourne.
Shame if they don't :(

If you are intending it for commuting I'd get one of these. They rock, have all the stuff (8 speed hub, lights, rack, low maintenance roller brakes). Hell... they even have a brooks saddle. What a ride!

Alternatively I bought my wife one of these and it totally rocks. She loves it. :) It's a Cannondale Adventure.

I'd be inclined to avoid any of those "women's frames". They are structurally irrational and they carry a weight penalty because of it.
A small compact frame is much better.

Not to mention they look awful.

lol it's not meant to be a racing bike. The "weight penalty" and bike weight generally is not important particularly for a non-racing bikes (yes they do exist! :)) within reason of course.

Step through frames are great particularly if you have a large load of shopping on the back (or even a passenger) - you can dismount without kicking whatever is behind you on your rear rack. Also as most people know it's easier to ride with a dress/skirt on, and it's generally easier to hop on off.

It might help the OP if there was a bit more detail about the type of riding his wife wants to do and what kind of bike she wants. A flat bar road bike may be fine for weekend riding but a more city oriented bike is probably better for day to day utilitarian use.

The first bike I asked about was a Cannondale but the dealer said nothing was available from them.
The Adventure 2 I looked at on their website didn't have Nexus gearing and the Adventure 1 was not brought into the country
Must admit I don't find the womens bike frames that appealing but it's for the boss and as long as she's happy that's the important thing.
She'll be using the bike for rides along the coast each evening for an improvement in fitness
