Super bright small rear light

Postby goudgey » Tue Oct 18, 2011 3:21 pm

Hi All,

I've seen a number of road cyclists of late sporting a very small, circular rear light which emits an enormous amount of light for its size. I've had a look at a few LBS's in my area, as well as all the usual on-line sites but none of the lights I've found seem to be the one I'm looking for.

From what I can see of the lights when fitted to other riders bikes, they would appear to be similar to the Niterider Stinger ( http://www.niterider.com/non-rechargeab ... taillight/ ) but are much brighter.

Does anyone have any ideas about what it is I'm searching for?

My best course of action may be to ask the cyclist when I next see one on the road.

Cheers
Mark

Mine fits the bill. An Exposure Redeye Mk2, really small, really bright!

It does need to be paired with an Exposure front light, using the smartport.

So if you can see a cord coming out of it and running to the front it might be a redeye.

After my last visit to my LBS, they saw my puny rearlight and suggested the PDW radbot 1000. Lightweight and has a reflector too.

I recently bought a Serfas TL-200 and was stunned by it, massive difference from the cheap 5LED type i had before. And good price at $28 from my LBS.

+1 on the radbot. Great light... super bright and just as reliable. :)

However by the description above I think it's one of the deal extreme tail lights. They aren't on the site at the moment so I can't link them but they are nauseatingly bright from behind. The downside is with them that you need ever more or bigger batteries, greater complexity etc etc. A radbot is overall a better idea..a imho.

I've actually had that happen recently because my rear light is offensively bright. I can't follow my wife with hers flashing as I felt physically sick.

The MOON rear light is very small, oval shaped & is USB rechargeable for 5.5hrs on the highest setting. (60 lumens)

I've stopped using it around any other cyclist & now carry a smaller Skully light.

I believe it might be this light from Goldcross that you're looking for (small, round, USB chargeable, very bright)

I've also seen the same light under other brand names, such as Jamis.

I didn't get my light from Cell but that was the top search result! :-)

Hi,

The Radbot is a great light. I also have an Exposure flare that I use as a second light on my commuter; http://www.this link is broken/exposure-flare-mk-2-rear-light/. Great light - small and with a really good mount that will fit prety much any shaped tube. Very bright as well; especially if you use Exposure's rechargble cells.

The Blackburn Mars 4.0 is also very bright, as bright as the Radbot 1000, but the Dinotte is brighter. The Radbot is good as it has a built in reflector. Personally I reckon lights like the Mars 4.0 and Radbot (ie. 1W output) are about as bright as should be used, for the care of other people's eyesight.

i dont rate this highly as a rear light... i use mine on my helmet as a supplementary one but would rely on it solely.

I have the tioga dual eyes.. cheap ($12) and super bright and revied well on evans cycles. (it tied with the serfas one - theyre the same light but i couldnt find the serfas on anywhere).

My vote goes for the Magic Shine MJ-818. 3W**, a variety of flashing options, and with a Y cable for a couple of bucks, it teams up will with the 900 Lumen MJ-808 front light.

It's bright too - made the mistake of looking directly in line with the rear when the center LED went off   . Bright as. When fitted to the seatpost mast, it gerts angled down well, so doesn't blind drivers, and illuminates the back of the bike as well.

Been drenched in water from riding in the rain and still works a treat.

** Chinese Watts = 0.6971 Normal Watts, so is really a 2 and a bit W rear light.

Loved my RadBot - seems to have got a bug now though after one year of use in rain hail or shine.

It now seems to drain the battery really quick and just doesn't seem to have the kick it used to.

It may need contacts cleaning or something not sure - but pulled an old Cateye out of my spares box the other day not as bright but still wokring good as the day I got it been treated the same if not worse than the Radbot.

I purchased one of these Cateyes for my son's roadie and am very impressed with the brightness for it's size. It's still running on the original battery so life seems very good and there have been no issues to date with moisture. I replaced the standard mount with Cateye's HP series seat clamp and the matching bracket for a few extra dollars as I have found the standard mount a bit bulky & fiddly.

Thanks for all the replies folks.
Some really good recommendations on lighting here. None of them seem to match what I've seen though, namely a small circular stand alone unit (with no separate battery pack) as far as I can tell.
Perhaps I'm searching for something that doesn't exist - a small, discreet, very bright but cheap rear light! (although, many do fit the bill!)
Cheers

You are most likely looking for a single LED unit then such as the Super Flash or the RadBot - did you see the actual unit up lose or just hte lihgt it was putting out?

There are cheap lights out there - but surely your life is worth a good $50 bucks (if can afford it that is)?

Steve-W, I saw the light in passing and it appeared to be similar to the Niterider Stinger that I linked to in my original post. Just a simple round red light in a small black case that was fitted to the seatpost with no obvious external battery pack. The cyclist in question then pulled past me and continued riding away from me up the hill (gotta work on that! :? ) and when he was approximately 300 plus meters in front of me I could still clearly see the light, so bright it was. The light wasn't flashing, although may have had that functionality and it was sunny at the time.
I've got a set of Bontrager lights (front and back) so I'm covered, but would prefer something a little brighter at the rear.

i have an exposure flare http://www.exposurelights.com/product/000059/flare/
75 lumens, flash or constant brighter than alot of peoples front lights. pop the battery in and screw the the light back together. no moisture problems tighter than a ducks butt.

That is a pretty impressive light - been looking for something new to replace the RadBot that is very easy to move from bike to bike or get 3 cheaper ones.

One those NiteFlux guys could be the answer.

Super bright small rear light

Postby Dr_Mutley » Thu Oct 20, 2011 1:07 pm

I used to use radbots, but changed to these as I think they are a little brighter, and certainly a little smaller and more aesthetically attractive...
